Just caught this on Cinemax. Quite a movie, I thought. How did I miss this originally? Was it a hit? Looks like it pulled a couple of Oscar nominations for Supporting Actor (William Hurt..who was in the movie for 10 mins max) and Writing/Screenplay.

Viggo is a little Client Eastwood +Charles Bronson + Chuck Norris all wrapped in one guy. What a stud. Check it out if you haven't seen it.

Both movies were very good. The action and violence is brief but when it is on screen it is at a high level and raw in nature.

Very suspenseful movies that had me watching to see what was going to happen next in every scene. You never knew when the violence would errupt but the tension would continuously build. Both movies had similar themes that primarily involved Viggo's characters who would have existed non-violently but who's circumstances changed without their choice and thus required them to use violent means for self preservation or for the greater good of others.

I should just save my rant on A History of Violence and David Cronenberg since this topic comes up every so often.

**** David Cronenberg. A History of Violence sucked. It not only sucked, but it sucked hard. Not even Maria Bello in a cheerleader costume sex scene was enough to save this movie. What a worthless, empty exercise. Ed Harris is almost dead to me now. It's like he's personally jumped the shark, so no matter how much he tries, he's always going to be over the top in any role.

You know what would have been a good movie? If they started when Viggo sits down to dinner with his family after killing all those dudes. How the **** do you react to your dad being like that? THAT is tension.

I really was not a fan of the movie they presented, and because of that I didn't go see Eastern Promises. Looked like more of the same, and based on the fellating of the reviewers, I decided to pass.

William Hurt chewed some serious scenery in that movie.

In a good way.

I liked both films, but History of Violence was my favorite of the two.

My GF particularly liked the fight scene in Eastern Promises where Viggo's junk was flopping around in the sauna. I personally could have done without it, but I do admire Viggo for doing it. It added a certain vulnerability to the scene.

We must have seen the unrated version.

Hey, buck up, dude.

I think Jessica Alba has a new flick coming out in the summer. You might like that.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought this movie sucked balls.

How the hell did William Hurt get a nomination for best supporting actor when all he did was stereotype a Jewish mobster???

'you could die, joey....you could die.' give me a ******* break.

I DVR'd A History of Violence about 8 or 9 months ago. Watched it one day & was blown away by the first 15 minutes or so & thought "damn, why haven't I heard anything about this?" The answer to that question became obvious by the time the final credits rolled. The premise was great, Viggo was great, the cheerleader outfit & stairwell scene was outstanding, but the rest of the movie fell apart. It ended up being quite a let down.

Yes, because I don't like David Cronenberg I must be a vapid, tasteless fool ....

What was it that Socrates said? Know thyself?

what the hell does William Hurt call him at the end of the film? brough-ham ...bro-heem ....it was something stupid that pissed me off

I will admit that overall the movies aren't great. But it is like a book that has great chapters. There are some amazing scenes in both of these movies. Again I like the stance on violence they present. Particularly I like the feeling the viewer gets watching some of those scenes. You get over exposed with violence in movies today that you don't always react to it when you see it. In these movies, you ******* react.

A vile and pointless movie. The staircase sex scene? Please. Flapjack hooters and a shot of Viggo's nub/prehensile tail. Yeah. Great.
