Any MXers on the board?

I recently got back into riding since my sons are old enough now and wanted bikes, and we are having fun. Used to ride at Rio Bravo back in high school days. My sons are riding Honda XR 50 and XR 70, and I am on a Honda CRF 250R: very quick bike, and these modern 4 strokes have power everywhere, not just in a narrow RPM range. Very different feel from the 2 strokes, and a lot of fun to ride.

Been riding recently at Three Palms near Conroe (outstanding facility), Highlands MX Park on the east side, and Southwest MX near Rosenberg.

Any Horn fans out there like to mix it up in the dirt?

I raced at Rio Grande (Rio Bravo's second track in League City) and at Danbury back in the day. We would go watch pro races at Rio Bravo...saw Marty Smith win the 125's (maybe 250's?) there once.

Rode Yamaha MX 100's. Would love to get back into it some day.

I remember Rio Grande, raced out there one time. Marty Smith was one of my heros then, after Roger DeCoster -- I rode a Suzuki TM 100 because Roger was a Suzuki man and I wanted the bike that looked like his.

The Yamaha MX's were similar to what Bob Hannah was riding, IIRC. My first bike was a Yamaha Mini Enduro 60 -- not a bad little machine for a 10 year old at the time. The minis are super-sophisticated now. Even the little 85s are water-cooled.

I was always a Yamaha guy so I rooted for Bob Hannah. DeCoster was the enemy, but I came to respect him very much. I had no idea he had jumped ship from Suzuki to become the leader of Honda's motocross effort in recent years.
What was the name of the other guy who was a teammate of DeCosters in the early 70's who also dominated the international GP scene?

We had lots of friends who rode. I had a friend who had a Penton 125...I would love to have that bike today. My step-brother had a Bultaco 125, and a neighbor had a Husqvarna...man I miss those days.

I wish I stll had all my old Motocross Action magazines...

This is what my bike looked like ( except we laid down the shocks to give it more real end clearance).

Sweet Yamaha there ... I think DeCoster's teammate might have been Gerrit Wolsink, he was on a Suzuki for a while.

Buddy of mine had a Bultaco 125 Pursang, and it was fast, well he was fast on it anyway. My cousin had a Maico, I think it was a 450 or something big like that, just a monster of a bike. I liked Kent Howerton on his Husky, and Jim Pomeroy on the Bultaco, if I remember that one correctly. Damn good times. I had pictures of those guys all over my bedroom walls, cut out of Motocross Action mag, of course.

I've been a motocross rider since I was 5. I can still remember my dad taking me to several Supercross events back in the day when the top two guys were Rick Johnson and Jeff Ward....ah the good ol days. I don't get to ride as much as I used to but when I do I go hard and have a blast.

Wow, that article brought back some memories. Funny to see how much the sport (bikes, riders, equipment) has progressed.
