They and a half dozen other bands knock the ever loving crap out of MTV Nirvana. Nirvana is a decent band with a heroine addicted singer/songwriter who got lucky. The best thing that ever happened to them is his death and Courtney Love. Now they live on. Without his suicide they are not mentioned even today other than on a Pop Up Video special on VH1.

Sorry Nirvana fans.

MLB freaking rocks.

"Chloe Dancer" is probably the single most underrated track of the 90s/Seattle/"grunge" (I hate that term) era. It's like "Stairway to Heaven" for my generation.

I don't hate Nirvana but they are barely an average band. But they are the ones that got lucky for some reason and hit MTV after the scene was very established.

I think my favorite band was Citizen Dick.

What Nirvana had was great melodies and choruses.
Although he never really got credit for it, and really liking the Foo Foghters for that same reason, I assume 50% of that was because of Grohl.
He's sort of the Phil Collins (genesis/solo career) of the 90's.

But, out of that scene it's Pearl Jam and not even close.

I thought Nirvana was awesome. They were really my first taste of alternative music. I had shied away from it until then. Now I have gone back a listened to many of the bands that built the alternative scene before grunge kind of exploded.

I think Nirvana was the best and Cobain the best song writer. Soundgarden rates a close second for me. And I really like the 1st two Pearl Jam albums when Stone Gossard did most of the song writing. Then he started giving that role up to Vedder and they just got bland in general.

Nirvana would have only got bigger with time. Now we see that Grohl was quite a song writer as well. I like the Foo Fighters too. With those 2 I think Nirvana would have been good as long as they stayed together.

I agree with the sentiment that nirvana had a distinct pop sensability and appreciation of melody that the other seattle bands just didn't have. to me, that's just the songwriting. every genre has a song writer that can make 3 or 4 chords sounds better than everybody else.

I saw all of those bands back in the day and probably rank them as the best, personally. I thought Alice in Chains 2nd album was good. soundgarden had it's high points. as far as I'm concerned, pearl jam has sucked it since their first record.

as alluded to above, mudhoney was also quite good. every good boy deserves fudge was an excellent album.

Mother Love Bone was fantastic. I've spent so much of my life listening to Pearl Jam that I have no idea who'd I'd be if Andy had made it. Can't believe how long ago all that was. Someone mentioned the other day that Matt Cameron had been with Pearl Jam for 11 years. In my mind he's still filling in and just left Soundgarden.

Cameron joining Pearl Jam in '98 only made sense. Did you know he originally helped those ex-Mother Love Bone guys (Gossard, Ament, & McReady) record their own demo under "Mookie Blaylock" before they eventually found their own drummer (Dave Krusen) and singer (some guy named Eddie Vedder)?

To add to that thought, Before the forming of MLB, Gossard and Ament were in Green River with Mark Arm and Steve Turner, who later, in turn, formed Mudhoney.

The break up of Green River in 1987 was mostly about the direction of the music. Gossard and Ament wanted to pursue a major-label deal, (which the later achieved with Pearl Jam) while Mark Arm preferred to remain independent and record for Sub Pop. Turner didn't like the heavy metal leanings the band was headed in.

It kind of all makes sense when you see where everyone flitered out and ended up. Seattle has one of the most interesting family trees in rock 'n' roll.

i'll take nirvana over MLB or pearl jam any day of the week.

soundgarden > nirvana > mudhoney > pearl jam > MLB

just my opinion.

nirvana > mudhoney > the melvins > soundgarden > pearl jam > alice in chains > MLB
