Mrs. R and I bought this nice, $2100 stainless steel Kitchen Aid refrigerator back in 2001 and all of a sudden, the ice dispenser quit making ice. I checked everything. The "arm", the sensor "eye", everything! THe water dispenser was still working, so I knew there wasn't a kink in the line. So I call a repair company to come take a look. He spent about 15 minutes on it and told me that the problem was a well-known design flaw in that the line that carries water from the back of the refrigerator through the top and down into the ice maker, is vulnerable to freezing because of the fact it is just on the other side of the ceiling lining of my freezer from one of the air ducts that blows freezing cold air. He informed me that Kitchen Aid retrofitted a kit, that I went ahead and had them install, that apparently contains a tiny heating element which prevents the line from freezing. And get this - I had to pay for it. I don't care if the refrigerator is out of warranty or not. It is a design flaw and just bad business to make the consumer shell out $225 dollars for a kit that keeps the water supply line to the ice dispenser from freezing! They should have taken the high road and recalled that ****. And it's not as though I keep my freezer on its coldest setting, either. It's just low of mid-way. I think they understand that having this legally fought would be illogical because of the cost, but ****. WTF? Your thoughts?
