It is like fighting in Vietnam, I feel your pain. Spray with Roundup and cover with about 6 inches of mulch.

There is a product called Maverick that will kill it.
I usually hesitate to recommend chemicals, but with nutgrass, it is WAR.

We have it too. Bad. My recommended solution:

My wife won't let me call in the airstrike that close to the house, though.

Round-up didn't seem to help on mine last year-it killed it but it came back about 500% more. I pulled it up with gloves by the roots, and so far I don't see any this year. But I only had it in three or four areas.
Round-up seems to work on some weeds, but not well on others-I think the "broad leaf types" can be controlled well with Round-up. I try not to use much in the way of chemicals, either, but a small amount of directed spray doesn't seem too harmful.
