Most underachieving Texas team ever?

There's a lot of season left, but it's starting to look like this could be the most underachieving Texas team to take the court. I miss Augustine.

Does Texas have a point guard that can handle the ball, play defense, and shoot reasonably well? No. Does Texas have any interior size after Pittman? No. Does Texas have good free throw shooters that can be relied on to not make turnovers late in games? No.

Does Texas have freshmen who force and rush shots and are not particularly adept at keeping between their man and the basket? Yes, a couple, anyway.

Does Texas have a bunch of fans who get giddily excited with each win and ridiculously bitchy with each loss? Yes.

Texas has a very, very good team. It has some serious flaws.

Deal with it.

Please don't say "very, very good". This team is a middle of the pack B12 team with more talent than any team except KU. . We were very lucky to beat A$M at our place. TT beats us if Dogus and Mason don't have career scoring nights. OSU wins if they make us shoot more than 7 FT's and Hamilton doesn't show up for the first time in a month. I said before and I still believe this team ends up as a 5 or 6 seed and maybe makes it to the second round.

The only teams that were more underachieving were the women's softball teams when Cat was pitching. Should have won at least one NC with the greatest player in the history of softball!!!

Texas has some good playes. You can tell by watching that they are not a "team'. No leadership on the court and no leadership from the coaching staff.

This group of individuals (can't call them a team) was very fun to watch early in the yar. Now, everyone knows how to beat them and i don't expect to be watching Texas come the 2nd weekend of the NCAA Tournament. We have Final 4 Talent and NIT Heads.

every decent defense knew how to stop greg davis. you simply rushed 4 and dropped everyone into coverage because greg davis would throw a short pass. similarly, everyone knows that barnes will go into the middle even though his players will face double or triple teams. in teh vernacular, we need more bombs and less short tosses.

What happened to this coaching staff??? They actually knew how to coached once upon a time. A team gets worse as the season goes on, then you really need to start looking at your coaching staff. This has been happening for the several years now. We have more talent than we have ever had but it does not show on the court.

When a team has few (if any) good outside shooters, teams are going to sag on you defensively. This team, much like last year, needs another dependable outside shooter or two.

J'Covan could be that guy but he needs to step it up.

You guys are engaging in a semantic debate about the meaning of "very, very good team," but not addressing the significance of my post about the limitations of the individual players. There is a lot of athleticism on the team, but for all the claims about the individual talent, who is a complete basketball player? Let's look at the five NBA candidate talents:

James--poor ft and ball handling

Bradley--poor ft and mediocre shooter

Hamilton--zero court awareness, poor defense, complete one on five mentality

Brown--too poor as a ball handler to play point effectively, makes silly passes, indifferent defender

Pittman--still good for only about 20 minutes a game, subject to foul trouble, not particularly good at creating space for his size, poor ft shooter.

It's all talent with serious limitations. The idea that the individual talent is somehow better than the team results isn't supported by a close examination of the players' skills. There is a lot of talent, but there area lot of weaknesses throughout.

Maybe I should have stopped with just one very, as Texas looks to be a team that can easily be considered a top 5 team on its good nights but out of the top 20 on its bad nights.

What I don't get about the team and the coaching performance by Barnes this year is why the same guy who managed to turn Klotz into a 29 minute a game player hasn't been able to get anything out of Chapman or Hill this year.

Funny how I got called out at the beginning of the season on these forums because I questioned the offense and the #2 ranking at the time. Right now..sag down in the middle and let Texas take shots from 3-point land, or let them drive into the defense and commit a turnover. An outside shot is not necessarily a 3-point shot, but you are going to have to make the opponent pay for playing the defense they are playing.

I don't buy the final four talent. This teams biggest issues are they can't shoot. Sorry, but if you can't shoot well then you don't have the talent. I don't give a rats *** what their HS rivals star rating was. Bradley and Hamilton are both streaky, but certainly not dependable. None of them can finish at the rim. James can't hit a friggin FT to save his live. They just aren't as good as their hype was.

I actually feel for Barnes. Here you are coaching a bunch of supposed HS stars and you get them here and realize they are 2 years away. It's not like Barnes hasn't proven he can take good HS talent and produce right away as he's done it many times. I think this group is just not as good as advertised, but maybe by the time they are jrs. we may have something.

Bradley and Hamilton aren't anywhere close to being ready for the NBA so they'll be here for another year or 2.

Shooting is a major problem from all over, bunch of talented individuals who can play parts of the game of basketball but i don't see many who do well on both offense and defense.

"Bradley and Hamilton aren't anywhere close to being ready for the NBA so they'll be here for another year or 2"

It doesn't matter they are gone. The NBA is headed for a lockout in 2010-11 and any underclassman with a pulse is going into the draft this year. NBA Lockout SI article

Absolutely pathetic performance today.

-- Jordan Hamilton. You make Allen Iverson look like John Stockton. Whoever it was that called our game said our best offense today was crashing the boards when you touched the ball. That is as close to announcer smack as you'll ever hear. Feel free to P-A-S-S the ball next time you have a hard time hitting water from a boat.

-- Damion James. When you gave OU your verbal committment 4 years ago, I'm guessing you dreamed of single-handedly winning a game for the Sooners. Well, cross that one off your bucket list. I'm pretty sure Barnum & Bailey has a circus animal that can hit more than 4/13 from the FT line. Try closing your eyes - seriously.

-- J'Covan Brown, Jai Lucas, Dogus Balbay & Justin Mason. Tough to say what was worst today: your offense going 3/15 from the field, or your defense and getting torched for 24 from Mason-Griffin and 20 from a guy I could swear used to be a cheerleader.

-- Rick Barnes. Without a doubt, this is your worst year to date. You have taken a team that most "experts" thought had Final Four talent and turned them into a middle-of-the-pack Conference team. Whatever you are doing to help this team with their FT problems - stop. And start using some TOs to slow down the momentum in the game. Too many times this team has a mental lapse in the game that ends up being a 15-2 run and all you do is sit there and drink your water. Get off your *** and start earning your paycheck.

I didnt wanna say this at the beginning of the season but in the back of my mind i felt like this team was being a little overhyped. I thought their preseason ranking should have been more along the lines of 10-20 considering we lost by far our best scorer in Abrams. I also think the loss of Varez Ward is being slightly overlooked. JaCovan Brown has shown flashes, but IMO he isn't quite ready for the minutes he's getting. And it would really help if either Chapman or Wangmene could step up and take some pressure off of Pittman because he's far from the dominant force that we thought he was......
And outside of the Ok state game, Jordan Hamilton makes me wanna hang myself sometimes with his selfishness on the offensive end of the floor. Does Rick Barnes talk to him about this, because if he does its being blatantly ignored. And if he isn't than wow. The only guys that i feel like are giving it their all on a nightly basis are Damion James (even though he had an off night tonight), Avery Bradley, Balbay and Mason. The truth hurts, but its the truth non the less.

I dont know how i left Johnson off that list. I've always liked his energy. That wasnt on purpose at all, just simply overlooked him. I would love to see a guy with Gary Johnsons energy in Pittmans body
