"keep the American people safe" - per Obama at debate last night...

I imagine all the candidates left would say the same thing. And I havent heard him say it but I believe W would agree.

Problem is, that isnt the President's most important job.

Number one on that list is to protect and preserve the Constitution of the United States - which includes the freedom and liberty of its citizens.

This is a major distinction. Protecting our Constitution and freedom does mean a strong defense of all threats at home or abroad. However it does not include protecting and keeping American's safe from our own mistakes (ARM foreclosure bailout). Protecting freedom also argues against overly intrusive Patriot Act / Homeland Security actions.

Beware of the politics of fear.

From my view, the most important job of a president is when he gets to appoint Supreme Court justices. The rulings and decisions handed down by this court will more than likely have more of a direct impact on my life. Fiscal and monetary policy not so much. As far as keeping me safe, that's nice to know.
