I remember being sick at the prospect of Bobby Bowden “firing up the private jet” to come to Texas and recruit right before the signing deadline. David Warren, Kevin Emanuel, Patrick Hughes, and Montrae Holland just to name a few he stole out of our state.
TEXAS would regularly lose recruiting battles with Notre Dame, Miami (Fla.), Fla. St., UCLA and Colorado. Teams like Michigan, Ohio St., Oklahoma, Nebraska and LSU would systematically come into our state and cherry pick the top high school football talent.
I look at these teams today and only Oklahoma and LSU continue to consistently get top talent that Mack Brown is offering. Notre Dame has a two star kicker out of Dallas; Miami (Fla.) got Alonzo Highsmith’s kid as a legacy; Fla. St. got a kicker from Houston; UCLA has a two star OL from Tyler; Colorado does have three three star recruits, but that is it, no one that Mack offered. Michigan got a three star WR and Ohio St. has zip from Texas. Ten years ago this would have been utterly absurd. Go back and look and you’ll see many, many Texas kids on the above rosters.
Not anymore, for the most part Mack Brown has turned off the flow of top talent out of state, with the notable exceptions of Oklahoma and LSU. I know there is an occasional flyer that Mack may miss, but it is an exception rather than a rule as it was ten years ago. I will say as a side note, Bo Pellini is stocking up on Texas talent, Nebraska has 9 of 22 recruits from Texas, all three and four stars. And Mack might have offered a couple. If Bo continues this trend I look for Nebraska to get back up quicker rather than later.
I guess there are a couple hundred or more recruits Texas produces every year. TT, anm, Baylor, TCU, Houston, UTEP and Rice are still getting their kids from in the state of Texas but only after Mack Brown recruits his and almost none that Brown offers. For me this fact has been one of the most satisfying aspects of Mack Brown at The University. Hook’em Horns.
