More NCAA rule changes to shorten games

Main points :

- They propose using NFL-style 40-second clock between plays; it will still be 25 seconds following change of possessions.

- Also like the NFL, the clock will stop when a player goes out of bounds but start again when the ball is spotted (exc. last 2 minutes).

- A coach will get an extra instant replay challenge if his first one is upheld. Under the old rule the coach had only one challenge whether he was right or wrong. Under the new rule the coach, if he's right, will get one extra challenge, but no more.

- If a kickoff goes out of bounds, the receiving team will have the option of taking the ball on its own 40-yard line. The previous rule gave the receiving team the ball on the 35-yard line.

- The incidental five-yard facemask penalty will be eliminated. Only the 15-yard facemask penalties will be called.

- A "horse collar" tackle, where the defender grabs inside the back collar of the shoulder pads to pull the runner down, will now be a personal foul.

- There will no longer be sideline warnings for players and coaches who crowd onto the field during the game. The official may assess a five-yard penalty without a warning for the infraction.

How about getting rid of the 80000 commercial breaks and the commercials coming out of commercials? And all that crap.

That would shorten the games.

Hell... just have one major sponsor logo in the score box and 2 commercials per break.

No wait, that makes too much [censored] sense.

I want more football not less.

The last time they tried to shorten the game they reversed the rule change after one season. Why are they trying it again?

Touchdown

[2 mins of commercials]

Extra Point

[2 mins of commercials]

Kickoff

[2 mins of commercials]

15 seconds of football, 6 minutes of commercials. If we could get that 15 seconds down to 12, it would really shorten the game...

Only the first two items on that list are aimed at shortening the game. I can live with the first one (although I am sick and ******* tired of them tryin to make college football indistinguishable from the NFL), but the second one sssssuuuuuuuucccccckksssssss!!!!!

Aside from the replay and kick-off rule I hate all of these changes. But they're certainly better than the rule changes that were implemented in 2006. And if it keeps other games from rolling into Texas games, I suppose I am for the time management changes.

The faskmask rule is absurd. I have to see this one going the way of the halo rule. There's no way that you can assess 15 yards for every face mask. I've always been opposed to the horse collar. It's part of the game. And the sideline warning thing has to be a stab at Texas.

Just leave the game alone. The time killer in all games is passing. And when a Tech like team plays, that is what everyone remembers the most. Those games take 9 hours.

How about limiting commercial length to 30 seconds or less, max of two at a break? Maybe four between quarters? You could shorten the time a game takes by a LARGE amount by doing that.

Several years ago, they showed some soccer games with a sponsor's logo framing the image occasionally, along with a logo by the on-screen scoreboard. I always thought that was a good way to not interfere with the flow of the game.

I honestly like the less-intrusive ads, like the "First down line brought to you by NNN". Doesn't stop or interrupt the flow of the game, but still gets the message across.

I'm with you Super, but then the corporate elitists will start charging to watch the games. How much would it suck for those of us who don't live in Texas or those who can't afford or get a ticket have to drop $19.99 to watch it on TV. And you know the RRS would get jacked to $39.99. Commercials suck, but they are the reason basic TV is free.

As far as commercial breaks go there is a preset number of them per quarter. The only time you see them after both the extra point and the ensuing kickoff is if a drive takes a lot of time off of the clock. It may seem like they always do this but it is not the case I assure you.

Now I am sure the number of ads per quarter has increased slightly over the last several years but without those sponsors the game would not be on anyway. I will put up with a few more commercials if it keeps the games on.

The other rules are stupid.
I hate that going out of bounds rule with the clock restarting.
If it passes coaches are going to have to change their play-calling late in the game (before the last 2 minutes) if they are behind.

Is the rules committee afraid if they don't make any changes they will lose their jobs? For once just say it was a hell of a year and we see no reason to change things, and watch the appreciation from fans, shcools, and coaches roll in.

The one good thing about the play clock being at 40 seconds is that at the end of a game you know how much time will run off between plays. It isn't up to the referee to "spot the ball quickly". I like that uniformity.

It does suck if a team like Tech plays before "your" team on TV and you don't see most of the 1st quarter because the 75 total passes and 80 total points took forever.

The speed up rule about starting the clock on a new possession sucked but other speed up changes are fine with me. The actual playing-time won't be reduced by that much.

I disagree with shortening the game. Just ******* stop wanting so much money and cut out one commercial break and there we go

Well I have to admit that I almost never watch soccer. I think I was at a bar or something, and the game just happened to be on and I noticed the frame ad thingy. I thought it was a good idea...

Enough ******* around. Shorten the number of quarters, drop the number of pass plays or passing altogether and give me more reality tv. I really need my update on the survior all-stars.

1) Okay with me... one reason why Tech games suck.
3) Okay with this one, too. Why should crappy officiating take away a challenge.
6) I hate the horse collar tackle. Ejection would be fine with me.
7) I never understood why the officials had to stop the game to announce to the world that a warning is being given. Just warn the coach and move on.

And enough with these four downs already. If you can't get 10 yards on your first try, then you should have to punt the freakin' ball. You don't deserve to be on offense.

I'm pretty sure the new proposed rule is that what was previously a 5-yard facemask penalty is now not a penalty at all.
