More LHN Angst

Alright there's been too many days since there's been an anti-LHN post. Since I've never been accused of being part of the Silent Majority, here goes:

It absolutely SUCKS that SMU, not only with upgraded arena, coach, team and opponents, has ALL it's conference games nationally televised and The University of Texas at Austin is relegated to having its games on a 2nd-rate network that is seen only by a chosen few.

Just pisses me off. Though I gotta say - I love watching SMU basketball.

I signed up for Grande in Corpus so I guess that makes me one of the chosen few.

I liked the network better when it showed the utsa games last year; they were a lot of fun.

What I don't understand is why UT agreed to it and ESPN thought it would sell. I know we got some money, more than we got for making the Chevy Silverado the official truck of UT football probably, but it seems awful intrusive of the coaches's times and the old games are the same ones over and over.

I live in Katy TX and cannot get LHN.

Since LHN started I do not get to see many of the early season men's basketball games.

LHN sucks for me.

As another disgruntled Kat y resident I agree. Sucks that only LHN provider for area is Consolidated. For the number of TVs in my household they could not support. Whole thing just sucks.

As one of the chosen few, I get ATT U-verse here in McKinney ... I watch the channel for more than just football. Last eve I watched the Men's & Women's dual swim meet with UGA. I am so sorry that there are so many of the "little people" out there that cannot see the Horns 24/7

I am in Temple with Time Warner, and I really enjoyed watching Texas volleyball on LHN. I've enjoyed fall softball (when I got to watch the college where I work play the Horns), dual swim meets, vintage football games, and programs about arts and academics.

For the first time in my life, I am among the chosen few. I have to say I like it.

The Link

Of course ESPN can get the SEC network on large carriers from day one. Yet the three largest carriers still don't have LHN after more than three years.

Wouldn't it be ironic if ESPN/Disney used the SEC network to finally get LHN on one of the big three carriers.

It annoys me to no small end that I can't pay ESPN/Belmont $$ a month for a longhorn network online only access.

I need to find someone who can lease me a sub account for baseball season.

"It annoys me to no small end that I can't pay ESPN/Belmont $$ a month for a longhorn network online only access."

I can't think of any other television network that would offer the same deal without subscribing to the actual channel. I think maybe we're kind of spoiled because we know people who use HBO:GO to watch things like Boardwalk Empire, but that's typically because they use someone else's login for it.

Since online only is the way of the future, maybe it'll happen sooner rather than later.

Just installed TWC today and I am amazed at the production quality of the Longhorn Network. I love it.

This post got me wondering, so I looked up the TV schedules of both SMU and Texas and here's what I came up with:SMU
ESPNews - 8
CBS Sports Network - 7
ESPN3 - 6
ESPNU - 4
ROOT Sports - 1
ESPN/ESPN2 - 1
FSSW+ - 1

Texas

LHN - 11
ESPNU - 6
ESPN2 - 5
Big 12 Network - 5
ESPN - 1
ESPNU/ESPN2 - 1
CBS - 1
ESPNews - 1

So, while 11 Texas games are LHN, 7 of them make it on to one of the top two ESPN channels or CBS (compared to just one for SMU), and 6 of SMU's games are Internet-only on ESPN3.

(I would have broken it down by conference, but I have no idea who's in the American Athletic Conference. I can at least tell you that only 4 Texas conference games are on LHN.)

Yeah but who really wants to watch SMU basketball? I dropped Directv after 13 years of subscribing to them and I told them the reason. We have Fios and watch LHN all the time, have the IPod app and the IPhone app so I watch it whenever and where ever I want.

Ponies and Horns in Final Four. Ha!

Okay, since I've posted I think all Horns games have been on tv. Good for me.

We switched to AT&T U-verse when LHN first became available on it.

Now, the only major carriers in Texas not carrying LHN are Comcast, DirecTV and Dish Network.

Jettison those intractable, satanic carriers if you have an alternative that has LHN.

Otherwise, demonstrate in front of the offices of Comcast, DirecTV and Dish Network in your area to force them to carry LHN.

Those non-carriers are pure evil, and the entire world deserves to know it.

"demonstrate in front of the offices of Comcast, DirecTV and Dish Network in your area to force them to carry LHN."

They have no reason to. If ESPN/DIsney/LHN is charging $0.40/household (it's probably less than that now because of more subscribers than a year ago), and the most converts that the corporations could swing was 200K tops (living alumni/fans who don't already have access to it), then it's basically a wash or possibly a slight loss in terms of revenue.

If DirecTV got it the others would have to fall in line. As long as they have the Sunday Ticket promos forever, they're not going to need LHN for any support whatsoever.

As one of those many who live in areas with no cable, I think when either dish or dtv add it there will be a big swing of subscribers.

But the big swing of subscribers isn't big enough to justify spending the $15 million annually on the channel. Like I said, they'd need thousands of converts, probably more than there are living alumni.

as stated earlier, I'm on a roll. All Men's BB games have been on either national or regional tv. Including last weekend when I could sit at a Blackjack table in Vegas and watch the Texas-Kansas game. Sweeeeeet!!! Tomorrow K-St. Go Horns!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If Comcast is allowed to buy Time-Warner, I believe they will add LHN which will give VERY wide coverage. Just a hunch that Comcast would not drop a network--this would go against some of their anti-antitrust rational for the acquisition.

Had funny conversation today. Outside of Morgantown WVa on a job. Asked avid WVa fan if the UT game would be on local tv this Saturday. He said he was pissed b/c it's going to be on LHN. I told him, "Welcome to my World." He was stunned. Said he thought everyone in state of Texas got to see LHN. Ha!

It's just funny what the perspective of people across the country is re: LHN.
