Mopac and William Cannon -- what gives?

Anyone know why this intersection was never completed? It's got to be, without a doubt, the worst intersection in Austin...Traffic is horrible 24/7. Do they have plans to complete Mopac over William Cannon, or is it going to be this screwed up for the immediate future?

it's scheduled for completion once I35-Ben White is done. Then they'll have to go back to 35/BW after finishing MoPac and Wm Cannon because they should be builing a northbound 35 to westbound ben white ramp, too.

Whoever had the great idea of having a 4 lane highway marge into a 2 lane highway and then be interrupted by a stop light....What a ******* IDIOT!!!!

I've lived in Austin for 8 yrs now and from what I've seen, Austin city planners or whoever is involved, aren't the brightest people.

It's scheduled to start construction in '04. the dirt they've been bringing in is from the Ben White/I-35 mess. They're trying to pre-plan a little bit.

It was a poor choice by the people involved not making a flyover at William Cannon the first time around.

As an aside, the city has managed to duck its head in the sand while tens of thousands of people still move here each quarter.
Maybe if they stay down there long enough Armadillo World Headquarters will reopen.
I will never understand the logic of,"building roads causes people to move here"

Last I checked the people have been here for quite some time.

Started college in '95 and I knew then that there were road problems. Good to see eight years and a technology boom later we still have nothing to show for it except for plans for a Lance Armstrong Bikeway.

At least we've "Saved the Springs"

I was told that Mopac/Wm Cannon was never completed because while they were developing they discovered some environmental problem there (some species was living there or something- I'm not sure) and they stopped building there. Hopefully they will rebuild soon. That is truly a ****** intersection, and it's too bad because it seems like a nice area to live.

Is it true that a plan is in the works for a highway running parallel to I-35 from San Antonio to Georgetown?

Yes. MoKan/Texas 130 is a toll-road that will run from Seguin to Georgetown. It'll be fairly expensive though, so i don't know if anyone will use it (last I saw, $6 from Geo. to ABIA). Construction should start someday.

ALso, they're talking about building railroad tracks on Texas 130 and getting all the freight trains of the Union Pac tracks on MoPac/in S Austin.
