Montreal in September

I just found out that I have to go to a conference in Montreal for work. I know absolutely nothing about the city outside of the fact that i hate the Canadians, and the Expos do not play there anymore.

Where are the good places to go?

Where should I stay?

Where should I eat? Drink?

Thanks

i dont know crap about Montreal, but I went to Quebec City for a fall weekend back in college, and it was amazing - such a beautiful place. Not far from Montreal (I think abt two hrs?) but if you're just there for a work conference may not be worth the schlep.

crescent street for drinking/partying

edited to add: the olympic village area was kinda neat. just walking around the old montreal and the old port area was pretty cool, observing the mostly gothic architecture and stuff. mount royal was also pretty nice. there were a lot of pubs/bars with live music, but i can't exactly remember where all that was since someone showed me around.

I just got back fom a a bachelor party in Montreal

crescent st is completely touristy. Every bar you go into you feel like you are in a TGI Fridays. However, it's the "anglo" part of town where most are Americans or non-french canadians

St Laurent st is much nicer where you can find the dinner clubs and nicer lounges. Nice restaurants that turn into clubs around midnight. Buan Notte is a good spot. This area is definitely more "montreal".

if you are into strip clubs, most are "full contact". $10 dances where you go into a private booth and they "encourage" you to touch everywhere but virginia

There is a decent casino about 15 min from downtown area. You can't drink at the tables (but can at the bar next to casino floor)

We stayed at the Hilton Boneventure which is downtown. Decent hotel. There is a really nice W Hotel near there, and an Intercontinetal as well

Busy morning so I'll be brief...

Sofitel in Montreal is great - excellent service and good location, close to Saint Catherine Street (lots of shopping) and Crescent street (touristy but full of restaurants and bars).

I liked the Plateau area - basically Boulevard Saint-Laurent (known as "The Main". One great (and often pricey) restaurant after another. Somewhat 6th streetish at night.

Obviously check out Vieux Montreal and the port area.
