Mobile phone question

Is is possible to have more than one mobile phone using the telephone number at one time? If so, do the service providers care if you do this?

The reason I ask is because I am thinking of getting another phone, but I don't want to throw away my old phone just yet. For one thing, I have spent money on accessories (sync cradle for example), and I don't want to throw that money down the drain. Secondly, I want a phone with a camera in it, and you can't take those phones into most courthouses. So I want to have one phone to carry when I go to court, and another one to carry the rest of the time. I won't ever have more than one phone turned on at any given time.

Back in the day, Sprints original dual-band phones could also support a second provider. You would do Sprint for digital and the ATT on the analog. The biggest upside was that the phone was essentially free (paid for by Sprints contract), which meant you didn't have to pay for a second phone. It was cool, except that sometimes you'd be on the phone and then it would ring in your ear. I doubt it can still happen.

Thanks, MilkmanDan, I hadn't thought about that. In other words, do I just go to the store and buy another phone, and ask them not to program a new SIM card for me? Then just switch the card that I have from phone to phone?

Exactly. Just do an equipment-only purchase (you will probably have to pay full SRP price for this...they won't discount it). Make sure you are saving all your phonebook entries to the SIM card and you can just switch it back and forth.

You can also try getting an unlocked phone (or one from your provider) from eBay...I haven't done it myself but I may give it a try soon.

Yeah all you do is switch your SIM cards. I do it all the time with Fiance's phone. Sometimes he needs my phone because of the camera so we just swap out sim cards. ...and don't forget to make sure your number are being saved to the SIM card. My phone was originally not doing it but I just had to change a setting and all the numbers transferred.
