MLB could take a lesson from the NFL

First of all, I don't necessarily agree with the NFL's proposed rule to force players to get haircuts so that you can read their names. To me that is a bit of "micro-management". I can see maybe making them compress the hair into some type of net or bun. (If you tell a player he has to wear his hair in a bun, they may just cut it out of pride.) But I like the NFL putting in policies to keep the uniforms uniform.

MLB is known as "American's Past-time"
and they need to put some rules into place to let these players know that none of them are above the game. For starters . . .
1) Force players to wear their hats on straight.
2) Tuck in your F'ing back pocket.
3) No jewelry. Nothing around your neck, no ear-rings, nothing.

That is all.

Wow - that's a bunch of quality replies right there. Let me try this from a couple of different angles. The NBA requires all players to wear business attire when they travel. I'm pretty sure Stern put this policy into place to clean up the image of its players for the people that attend the games: corporate America. Personally, I don't give a ****. The players can wear wife-beaters & banana-hammocks for all I care when they're not on TV. But the policy is in place, the millionairs abide by it, and the Leauge probably does have a better image for it.
Is the image of MLB players at an all-time high right now? The Yankees do not allow facial hair. And some players are required (either by their specific team or MLB) to wear long sleeves to hide tattoos. Mustaches, goatees, fu man chu's, full beards, half-beards, "chin-strap" beards . . . ink/no ink . . . I could care less. But I'm talking uniforms
. And to me uniforms
should be uniform
. Specifically for the 3 hours of the day that these players are "working".

My business attire is business casual unless you are meeting a client - then wear a suit. I'll have to remember that witty "what are you 85?" line when my boss confronts me for wearing jeans and sandals tomorrow. Or maybe instead of actually tying the tie, I'll just drape it over my neck. Surely the management of my company and my clients won't comment on this in fear of me replying "does this really make you angry?"

Well, there's a big difference in what you do and what professional baseball players do. I really don't see how this compares to a business atmosphere. They play a game for a living, and its their job to entertain us as fans. Josh Hamilton, Hank Blalock, and Jared Saltalamacchia(sp?) all boast several tattoos, but it doesn't bother me, as long as they produce on the field and entertain me as a fan.

And maybe using the Rangers as an example for production was a bad one, but what can I say, I love a crap team.

I could agree with you if you produce some teams that allow extreme differences in their uniform. Seems like everyone has the same uniform to me.

considering im not black, thats pretty funny Chest....but good try

lets see, who is it that often times does the things that the OP is trying to stop...minority players

why does he not like it...oh the good ole days when every player was white and looked how he expects people to look

sorry, but it is what it is

i umpire in LL and i see it all the time, its just a style to them...theyre not doing it to disrespect you or the game, itll be ok

guys that wear their caps askew and/or without any curve on the bill just annoy me. not sure that i'd regulate it though. when i played as a kid, i wore the pants almost knee length. a lot of guys now wear theirs loose and ankle length. doesn't bother me at all. jewelry shouldn't matter. i'm sure the OP's company allows him to wear watches other jewelry should he choose to.

however, i think mlb does not allow players to wear their hats backwards. so my question is, how sideways can it be before its considered incorrect? and who decides and monitors this?

Yeah, and we should make all the basketball players wear Larry Bird shorts. It's a new day and age, and if their uniform doesn't affect how they play then who gives a ****?

That's right, I'm guessing you skimmed over this thread without reading my previous comments. (Again - for the 3rd or 4th time) I don't care about hair, facial hair, tattoos, ... , only the uniform. Do you really think the game will lose any popularity simply by making players wear their hats on straight?

Well there are two issues here.

1. Why does nobody give a **** about MLB compared to years past and..

2. Who has the right to decide the "dress code" for whatever occupation you choose.

The answer to question 1 is multi faceted and cannot be covered in a thread here. I'm not even going to start to try. I don't care enough.

The answer to # 2 is the OWNER OF THE TEAM.

If you own the team, you have the right to tell your employees what the acceptable dress code should be. It can be written into any contract for employment. The problem is if you want to sign Manny Ramirez, and you want him to cut that girly looking mop of **** he wears, it will probably cost you more than if you sign him and let him wear his hat crooked and his jock on the outside of his pants if he chooses to do so. J. Damon looked like a doobie brother while at the Red Sox, but as a Yank, he shaved and cut the mop.

It isn't a league thing, it is an owner thing. As a player, if somebody wants to pay you less because you want to wear bling and a crooked hat, you just have to be good enough to get them to make an exception.

This isn't a race thing. Yes MLB could use an image uplift, but it has more to do with the fact that the game is boring on TV and the fact that since the teams play 18,452 games a season it means that each game doesn't mean squat.

If I owned a team I'd insist on a clean cut look with straight caps...not because I want to be racist, and only racists themselves would claim that any owner that makes you do so is racist, but because it is more important for me to field a TEAM that is more concerned with conforming to a TEAM concept than being the Kool Moe D of the dugout.

Unfortunately the only teams I can run are on playstation and we have yet advanced to the point where I as owner can enforce a dress code. Therefore, If you can hit and field...you play.
