Mitt Romney...we hardly knew ya.

The presidential race is over. Well, Mitt Romney's is anyway. Perhaps if the economy completely melts down and the middle east descends into pure chaos, someone besides the President could win, but even a third party candidate as more likely than Mitt Romney.

I'm sure ya'll have already heard about this, but to those who have not, a video came out today of Mitt Romney at a fundraiser. In it he says a lot of things that would be shocking to a lot of voters, but this is the worst:

While I dig the truth, alienating the nation (OUR nation, whether freeloading or not) probably isn't the best way to go about winning an election.

He literally has no response if this is brought up in a debate. It'll just be "well, Mr. Obama, what good have you done in the last 4 years?" when the questions are posed (as they should be).

It is absolutely laughable that Mitt and his cronies keep repeating that he wasn't born with a "silver spoon" That is pure *********. Nobody believes this crap and I honestly don't understand why Mitt keeps repeating it.

He is (or at least should be) smart enough to realize that his is a problem of credibility and relatability. Being dishonest about the little **** is not going to help. This is easy, make this story about his father - the self made guy who did this and that to capture the American dream for him. But to say that he did not have an uber-privileged life with Daddy getting him into the best schools and guiding his success is just a lie.

Asking Obama what good Obama has done in the last 4 years is by far the DUMBEST thing Mitt could do in a debate. Obama has done more in 4 years for the average American than Papa and Baby Bush did in 12 years.
The Link

Mitt Romney is desperate and he should be. No amount of money is going to win him this election. And he is starting to see the writing on the wall.

I always thought that he was a smart guy and would run a scary good campaign but his campaign has been an utter disaster.

"I'll never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives."

So even if you dig the whole personal responsibility thing, it's ok to have a potential president calling them out for not "caring for their lives?" You dig social darwinism. If that's your thing, that's your thing. But don't expect a winner in 2012, or really any year going back to about 1984.

What the problem? The only people mad about this weren't going to vote for him anyway. Just like all of those people clinging to their guns and religion weren't going to vote for obama anyway.

Larry, I guarantee you the independents who are going to decide this election will take offense to these words. Even if you somehow agree with him, you have to see how this is going to bury his candidacy.

A lot of people are comparing this to Obama's clinging to their guns and religion comments in '08. Those comments were made under similar circumstances in trying to appeal to a base. I, found those comments, like you are with Romney's here, to be partially true and a fair way to explain things to a supportive audience. I grew up in West Texas...I know a lot of gun and religion clingers, and still think, as Obama, did that they could do well to know life can be better.

Regardless of the truth to the two sets of remarks, Obama's offended a small segment of very right wing voters who probably weren't going to vote for him no matter what he did or did not say. Romney on the other hand, i this case, directly assaulted a large portion of the very voters who will decide this election. And even swing voters who do not think the categorization applies to them, will view it as a cold, unsympathetic view. This is not going to pass easily.

I dont know..... did "bitter americans clinging to their bibles and guns" do in the Messiah?

Nobody outraged by this would have ever considered voting for this guy.

Whether Romney was talking about electoral math or not, it was a stupid-*** thing to say. 47 percent of the population is a lot. You can't just tell them to go f*ck themselves or insult them. Furthermore, there are enough of the other 53 percent who don't share his apparent disdain for the other 47 percent that making this kind of remark is going to cost him votes in the 53 percent. If this is Romney's approach, he really is done.

Are there moochers out there who are lazy bums with no initiative, and are they going to mindlessly vote for Obama? Of course, but it's not 47 percent of the electorate. Many of those in the 47 percent would choose a decent job over government assistance if the economy recovered and they could find a decent job. That's the angle Romney should be taking.

Was this at a fundraiser or a political meeting? I assume it was a private fundraiser but it would be interesting if it was a campaign meeting. Nixon was impeached for stealing campaign documents. It seems that stealing may not be necessary if "media" personnel video tape secret meetings. If it is a private fundraiser, I see that as fair game. However, what if it was a meeting where campaigners are bouncing off ideas and test marketing comments to panels? Obviously such comments could be taken out of context.

I realize that my comments are hypothetical but I am curious if there is such a thing as media ethics today. If the "media" personnel were trespassing and secretly filming it doesn't seem like there would be any action a candidate could take in his defense. Basically, it would mean that at any and all times a candidate has to be on guard whether it is test marketing or speaking privately to friends.

Honestly, whether the guys doing this are heroes or goats kinda depends on where you are coming from. Guy's who think Matt Drudge is the ultimate patriot probably think the
guy who leaked this should be in jail..

I agree with the comments about my hypothetical, but I think this stuff is only going to get worse. It is probable that if Obama was born 20 years later, at least one of his cocaine parties would be caught on tape. That in itself might not affect voters but I am sure the conversations would.

At the very least women voters would be turned off. This assumes that he wouldn't say something like gee Michele is really cute I would love to date her and instead would say something most guys would say while partying.

The point here is that with everything now being fair game, there is nowhere to hide. If you have a past, it will be out in the open for all. With facebook, camera phones, etc. there is no privacy. And anyone elected is going to have to be squeaky clean which eliminates most from running, The only thing that can change this is perhaps the electorate getting burnt out on personality attacks and wanting their officials to focus on issues. I don't see that happening though.

With all that said, I should make it clear that it was a dumb thing for Romney to say to any audience other than his campaign strategist. He now needs to own up to it and ride it out. This will continue a series of attacks by the media. It probably won't be a one week event like the Obama guns comment.

This is the second time in the last 10 days that the lefties have tried to start the "race is over" meme. The first time was after Romney's comments regarding Obama's mishandling of the meltdown in the Middle East, which is still going on, and which Mitt Romney was completely right about. In this second instance, Mitt Romney affirms to a private crowd that there are a lot of people who identify closely with the divisive class warfare argument that Barack Obama has made THE central theme of his entire campaign, and that these people have gone all-in with the welfare state, government dependency culture, and will undoubtedly vote for Barack Obama.

While I would take some exception with the way that Romney carved up that 47%, his broader point that people who identify with this way of thinking will vote for Barack Obama is correct, as everyone here surely knows quite well.

This will be objectionable to people who were not going to vote for Romney anyway. As much as Obama supporters might like to think they can take it on themselves to pronounce that "the debate is over," (remember the global warming debate), in realty that power only extends to the confines of their tiny little minds.

Only 49 days until November 6, 2012.

Poor people aren't just welfare leeches. They are people who work retail, construction jobs, two jobs maybe and worked damned hard for income that doesn't reach levels that they pay federal taxes. Many are far from failing to take personal responsibility. They may feel the deck is stacked against them ... their compensation is going down in real terms even as their productivity rises .. and they have reasonable fear and suspicion of people lke Romney who have transacted themselves to great riches and seem to have nothing but contempt for people whose feet and back ache at the end of the workday.

Yeah Sangre! Tell it! Those kids that chose to be born into a poor unsupportive family get what they deserve! If only everyone had the sense to be born to wealthy parentts like Mitt.
