ESPN gives Mizzou a 1% chance of winning. That’s too much in my book. Nothing for granted.

Mizzou (12-10) is tied for last place with Georgia and Arkansas. They average 70 ppg with three players (two barely) in double digits. Their lone conference win came this past Monday against Miss State (78-77).

Of note, one of their players is former Longhorn, Tionna Herron, who shows up so slightly on the Stat Sheet that I wonder if she is injured. She hasn’t played since Jan 2.

The player to watch is #0 Grace Slaughter who is coming off a 31 point game against Miss State. She averages 14 ppg.

I have found the Missouri game cause to ruminate about some of those things in women's basketball that I think hold the game back. A look at Missouri v. Texas women's basketball is one of those. It's not really an analysis of this game, it's a question of why some schools require coaches to produce winning programs or move on (and I am not really looking to fight over the Aston termination who I liked very much), and those who evidently decide that their completely mediocre (or really bottom of the pile program) is just fine because it checks the boxes of putting a women's team on the floor and not much else.

CDC, Jody and Vic always say the expectation at Texas is to be the best, and to create national championship teams. As a season ticket holder, I am aware that CDC is at our games seeing how his coaches are performing. At another SEC school, Pingeton has been at Missouri for 15 years, and has only had a winning record in the SEC for the years that Sophie Cunningham played for the team. To have great teams you have to invest in great coaches and programs, and I think there are still a lot of examples in the big conferences where mediocre coaches are holding spots where other up and coming mid-major coaches could come in and try and make a name for themselves. I personally think it's simply because Missouri doesn't care about its women's bb team, so they just let Pingeton do her thing and don't worry about it. The truth is, the SEC would be an even better conference if Missouri put a better product on the floor. It's an insult to your fans who buy season tix (all 26 of them) that you don't require your coach to produce, and it's obvious.

And it's not just your great big schools that get it. Look no further than Mississippi State, who took their wbb program to unseen heights with the hiring of Vic, and even though he is not there now they get more quality recruits than they did before he was there, and still have a rabid fan base that loves them dearly. It was a great investment in their team.

It's certainly not just the SEC, and it's certainly not just Missouri. But on this rainy day in Austin, she seemed to be in the headlights.

However, now that I've dished on Pingeton, Give'em Hell! Give'em Hell! GO HORNS GO!!!!!
