Ate there for the second time last night. This restaurant is highly underrated. It's owned by the same folks who own Castle Hill and even serve some of the same dishes (duck gumbo, for instance).

Great wine list. Great entrees. I had the braised veal, wife had the flatiron steak. Had duck spring rolls and pork tenderloin flautas for appetizers.

This place has 4-star food and good prices. They serve early dinner specials for a lower price too. Quiet. Great date spot that you would never think of. Mesa between Steck and Spicewood Springs.

Only been once, several years ago, but very much enjoyed it. Nice upscale food but in a pretty casual environment. Pretty large portions, I remember waddling out. Nice wine list with very fair prices and a good number of wines by the glass, if I remember correctly.

Great atmosphere too. Dark, quiet. I used to live in a duplex with some friends off of Mesa and used to take my gf (wife now) there on special occassions. Castle Hill Cafe is in my top 3 restaurants in Austin as well.

On the recommendation of this board I gave this a try last Friday evening. Waited about 20 minutes for a table, which is no big deal on a Friday night. Once seated, our waiter took our orders and then proceeded to ignore us the rest of the evening. We requested that our salads be brought at the same time as our appetizer, and had to remind him. Both of us ordered filet mignon's cooked medium. Upon arrival, one was medium well, one was medium rare. When we complained the cost of the salads were removed.

I'd go back because the menu had alot of interesting stuff on there, and I'm not that offended by bad service (plus, mine was the medium rare and I don't mind that either), but I think anyone else that goes there needs to bear in mind that they aren't consistent with the service or the quality of the meal (perhaps they are consistently bad, I don't know).

Prices were good for the types of entrees offered. I think the filet is $25. I did not find the wine to be as well priced as was quoted here and on chowhound, but then again, I just got back from Argentina (which might also explain why I didn't think much of the steak and wasn't that upset by inattentive service).

Take this from someone who was in the rest. business, don't eat there. I know, it's good value, but just don't eat there. Not the cleanest place in the world.

Well, don't just throw that out and leave us hanging. What exactly is the problem with Mirabelle? Presumably, they're passing their inspections . . . is there some hidden secret?

Ram - I know a girl who worked there and was actually FIRED from the place and she would still recommend it. If a person who worked at the place for 2 years and was fired will still recommend it, I'll eat there.

give it another shot LC. I've been there 3-4 times and have had great service and properly cooked food every time.

Like someone mentioned, there is a tie between Castle Hill and Mirabelle..... but from what I've heard, there is more to that story. Something to do with a nasty divorce settlement... but I'm certainly not int he know.

You're thinking of Dan's and Fran's.

Didn't realize the same thing happened with Dan & Frans. It seems to be a common thing. Didn't the same sorta thing happen with Mueller's or Cooper BBQ... or something along those lines. I remember reading about it in Texas Monthly.

I can second the remark about the bad service at Mirabelle's... We go there relatively often (~5 times over the past couple years) and the last few times, the service has mirrored the previous poster's comments. Generally ignored, slow, but w/o fail, the food has always been outstanding which is why we keep going back.

I could eat those pork flautas everyday and not get tired of them... Sooooo good.
