Kentucky Derby is coming up and I am going to throw a party for it at my place. I'd like to make some mint juleps while watching the race.

Anyone have some good recipes?

no special recipe, but I suggest getting the mint a few days before the race...A year or two ago, I tried to find some late teh friday before and had to make a half dozen stops to find a place that still had some in stock.

key is making the simple syrup....lots of good recipes on foodtv.com

made them a few years ago....got loaded and sick....love the derby

Since nobody has provided a recipe, I saw Alton Brown do it on Good Eats, and it didn't look too hard. I don't think it would be my cup of tea, though.

The mint julep segment starts around the 7:00 mark. Yeah, I know, one of his more painful performances.

My family is from Kentucky and this recipe has always been a hit.

Boil 2 cups of sugar in 2 cups of water for about 5 minutes. Let it cool and then place the syrup in a covered container along with 8 or so sprigs of fresh mint. Refrigerate overnight. The next day take a few mint leaves and crush them in the bottom of each cup you are serving the drinks in. Add crushed ice. Make the mint julep by pouring 2 parts bourbon for every 1 part syrup into the cup. Stir and serve with fresh mint garnish.
I always use Maker's Mark bourbon and they turn out great.
