Microsoft Entourage for Mac help

Any Mac experts out there who can give me a hand w/ a software issue?

Here's the deal: the motherboard on my G3 iBook was recalled & Apple swapped it out for free. They also upgraded me to OS 10.2.8

Everything's been working fine since I got it back (on Wed.) except for Entourage. I can launch it but as soon as I hit 'send/receive' Entourage crashes. I received 2 emails earlier this morning before it crashed, but nothing else has come through. All of my account settings are correct.

I contacted Apple & they told me to reinstall Entourage. I popped in the disc & selected Entourage for installation & it immediately told me I didn't need to install anything because it was already there. I'm assuming this means I need to uninstall it first.

Any tips on how to uninstall/reinstall w/o losing my old emails, e-dresses, etc.? I've moved my contact list to the desktop & assume that I can import it directly back into Entourage after I've reinstalled, but I just don't want to lose anything important.

Thanks for any tips.

Sorry for the hijack, but how old is your iBook? My girlfriend has a G3 iBook and I'm sure she wouldn't mind a gratis new motherboard.

2 years old. 800 Mhz, 14" screen. The problem was video related. It was originally repaired under warranty after about 15 months ago (screen would just whig out, vertical & horizontal distortions & then finally no video). It worked fine up until early December when it basically just locked up & I could never get it to reboot.

I had no idea that it was recalled. Took it to CompUSA (

Found out 2 weeks later (when we were wondering what the hell the repair status was) that the motherboard had apparently been recalled (we were never made aware of this) & CompUSA and Apple were arguing over who would pay for the repair. In the end it wasn't us, which is good.

First....try this:

1. Quit all Microsoft Office programs, including Entourage.
2. With CAPS LOCK off, hold down OPTION and start Entourage.
3. In the dialog box, do one of the following:
• To optimize data storage and reduce the size of the Entourage database, click Typical Rebuild.
• To fix corrupted data and reduce the size of the Entourage database, click Advanced Rebuild.
Caution Some of your data might be lost if you choose the Advanced Rebuild option. You should use this option only if you have already performed a typical rebuild and continue to experience problems starting Entourage or storing data.
4. Click Rebuild.
Note When you rebuild the database, Entourage adds two files to your identity folder in the Documents/Microsoft User Data/Office X Identities folder: Old Database and Old Database Cache. After you determine that rebuilding the database fixed the problems, you can move these files to the Trash or keep them as a backup copy of the database.

If that does not make Entourage run properly, then:

1. Back up your email
2. To do this type "backup" in Entourage help and follow the instructions.
3. Put the Entourage Application in the trash and any preferences for it.
4. Empty trash.
5. Restart
6. Try the reinstall.

Back up your email regularly.

Good Luck!

Thanks for the tips, tailgate. Wish I could say they worked. Tried both of the rebuilds but no dice. Looks like it's time to do a full reinstall or just use my Mail software instead.
