Michigan going right-to-work

Wow. I never expected to see this.

I understand the free rider problem, and I recognize that the business community is hypocritical here, because they're generally "freedom of contract" advocates and have no problem with other things being a condition of employment. However, you shouldn't be able to force someone to join a union or lose employment opportunities. That's way over the top. Unions simply are going to have to sell the merits of joining to their members.

Deeply disappointed in Governor Snyder. He is the only R I have ever voted for in my life, albeit, in the R primary. I crossed over and voted for him because I figured that the governorship would revert back to the Rs this past election and he struck me as an R I could live with if the Rs won the general election. I even thought that I would feel the same way if he became the R presidential candidate in 2016. Never again.

It is ironic that the Dems have branded themselves as the "pro-choice" party when they tend to oppose choice in so many realms. How anyone could be against giving workers the right to CHOOSE whether or not to join the union is simply mind-boggling. Nothing prohibits workers from joining a union however workers should feel that the union fees are justified by the benefit provided. If not, then the worker should be able to CHOOSE not to join.

I had no idea that Michigan had a Republican Gov and Congress.

Good for Michigan. Union power should be curbed. It's grown to be just as fat and corrupt as Upton Sinclair described business owners and managers to be in "The Jungle".

Is joining a union part of the job description for which someone is hired?

if not how can unions force members to join?

BTW How is Wisc doing? The last I read many school districts have been able to hire more teachers with the money they saved by not being FORCED to buy union health insurance

More and more union members are starting to realize that they aren't getting what they pay for. I pay into TSTA which is connected to NEA because I am a male teacher that works with young children. I have never needed one of the lawyers on staff because I have never been accused of anything. But, there are crazy people in the world, so its worth it for the piece of mind. However, for that $40 a month I piss away, all I get is a mail box full of junk mail. I'm sure they try to lobby on behalf of teachers but they were completely inept when it came to the last budget cycle.

Snyder has double-crossed, lied and sneaked this legislation. Detroit Free Press, a supporter, has come out against. The Link

Hook'em!!!

No big surprise that the Socialist-In-Chief showed up in Michigan to salve the union's butt hurt.

You'd think that with the fiscal cliff looming, this bonehead would stay in Washington and work around the clock on making a deal. But he can't stop campaigning. Maybe he can get the 22nd Amendment repealed so he can run for a third term.

:In the right to work state, it can't be part of the job description. "
So in right to work states it is a choice

which is exactly my point.

on another note I did some research into how Wisc is fairing after it elminated forced unions for public employees.
It is amazingly good news; more hiring by cities and schools. more pay increases, cities being able to restart some services that had been discontinued due to no money.

The fear that Unions use: that schools and cities may turn evil and enforce horrible working conditions or eliminate pay increases could still happen.
does anyone really think that is likely ?

i see where Michigan teachers are striking, uh excuse me calling in sick to protest their right to choose

There by closing down schools. But I guess that is ok since Michigan ranks so high in school performance Michigan kids don't need to go to schools.

what does THIS say?
"Detroit Federation of Teachers president Keith Johnson anticipates "a huge crowd" in Lansing for the protest. When asked by the Free Press if any Detroit Public Schools would be closed, he said, "Hopefully."

I just don't get it, how can a choice to join a Union or not be such an issue?

If a person does not want to join the union and would like to negotiate their own salary and benefits, why not let them?

This is the United States of America, it is the land of Freedom and Choice, why can't I choose?

I just want to be able to make a decision for myself, why can't I do that?

I get that whether you pay dues or not that you are subject to the union negotiated contract. I just think that a person if they so choose should be able to negotiate their own deal.

I want to take it one step further, I want my liberty.

Give me liberty or give me death!!!!

This may explain why Gov Snyder changed his mind on not going after right to work this year.
"Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder had previously said he had no interest in signing right to work legislation this term, but that has changed as unions have made it increasingly more difficult to govern the state. The Detroit Free Press‘ Tom Walsh explains:

Public employee unions opposed Snyder’s moves to put more teeth into emergency manager laws that would enable swifter action to rescue cities and school districts that bungled themselves into insolvency.

In Detroit, Mayor Dave Bing and a spineless City Council were stonewalled by employee unions at every turn, slow-walking needed reforms and cost-cutting while the city burned through cash at a frightening rate.

As a result, Snyder’s patient attempt to help fix Detroit via consent agreement instead of imposing an emergency manager has failed.

Michigan has both the highest unionization and unemployment rates in the Midwest.
