Michelle Wie, 1 off lead, DQed

That's a stupid *** rule, and another reason why golf isn't a real sport. Imagine if you had to sign a scorecard after a touchdown or it wouldn't count, or after each inning in baseball, you had to approve the events of the inning or else you would be disqualified.

Its stupid. You have a ton of people watching, including officials. You have cameras at every hole. Verify it and count it, or let her sign it late.

In golf, the player is responsible for keeping their own score and calling their own penalties, so while a tournament may appoint a player or third party as a marker, the rules require the player to verify and sign the card.

The rules of golf are intended to be the same at all levels, since you don't have cameras and rules officials at the club championship (or even the local US Open qualifier), you don't get them in the pro tournaments.

The tours could certainly write their own rules, but I don't think they're interested in that.

not sure this qualifies as a "train wreck" as you put it. She got called out of the area for a second by a sponsor and intended to come back (she only went 2 feet outside the tent). She went back and signed the card. This is a BS rule and it's why Golf lags behind other sports. This rule is not about anything but being based on a 70 year old rule that has no place in any sport. They call it "integrity of the game" and listening to the LPGA describe what happened was a sad state of affairs.

What this shows is a lack of focus. It is no where near a train wreck. She needs to just focus on her game and the women's tour. Stop worrying about the sponsors, her image, etc. Practice, play your round, sign your card, go home. Next day same thing.

Ridiculous. I understand that golf wants the pros to have the same rules as the weekend players, but I don't really think that this the case anyway. The last time I played, there wasn't a judge every X number of feet to help me with any rule dispute.

If Tiger did this in a major (I know that he wouldn't forget), how much do you want to bet the PGA would look the other way.

My reasoning for the "train wreck" quote was simply it seems for the last couple of years she has played badly tournament after tournament, and then when she finally gets the ball rolling, she makes what to every golfer out there a stupid mistake :/

I played competitive golf for 5 years, and I've chased down more than my fair share of opponents to get a scorecard signed.

Didn't something similar happen to Vijay last year.

Wie isn't being unfairly targeted. The rules are the rules and most other players manage to follow them. It would do the LPGA more good if Wie was their Tiger, but she seems to make poor/unlucky decisions.

It's funny that because a sponsor went and pulled her out of the tent (asked her to come out of the tent) 2 feet, she gets DQ'd.

If these people just wait patiently, she gets to play her 3rd round.

And yes, it is a rule. It is one of the most ******* retarded rules in all of sports, but it's a rule.

It's funny that Golf is seen to be this sport of gentlemen, when some of the biggest stars are such royal cocks.

As to the comment about no one caring about women's golf:

Women's golf is one of the few sports right now gaining fans. I think the only others are college and pro football. Everything else is declining. (Look at baseball.)

Granted, women's golf will never be at the level of men's golf but I think it could be the only women's sport that is somewhat successful in the mainstream. (They've been trying to shove the WNBA down our throats for years and no one cares.)

Right now the LPGA has a crop of young, telegenic, good golfers. (Lots of Koreans, too. I'm not sure why.) Michelle Wie being good would help the cause but there are others who are good enough and telegenic enough that teenage girls and adults alike would watch them.

Mrs. Deadhorse and I went to an LPGA event earlier this year. Aside from the difference is distance, they're every bit as good as the men.

Anyway, I'm not a huge women's golf fan but I think the sport has some upside to it.

Golf is a gentleman's game. It's the only sport where you can call a penalty on yourself. It's just as important to play by the rules than to win.

Wie screwed up, took responsibility, and she'll move on. Good for her.

Baseball is losing fans. Take out the Yankees and the Red Sox and their ESPN ratings are dog ****. What network is the National League playoffs on again?

Those early spare bowl games on ESPN pull better ratings than all of their baseball games not involving either the Yankees or Red Sox.
