Mrs. HHD and I went to the game last night. It was a great eighth-inning rally for the lead and a very nice ninth inning by Mike Adams to close. But definitely the highlight of the game was MY getting two hits (both infield singles) to reach 2000 for his career. He received a richly-deserved standing ovation for a couple of minutes. Sure hope he's still around as a Ranger in about five years to get number 3000.

wow! And he is due to get to 3000, barring injury in 5 years + a little, just like you said, at age 39? He will turn 35 this year in October, as the Rangers are finishing their season.

I like to do the math. Let's say he gets 40 more hits this year, 2040.

Then five years of 185, which is about his average for the last 3 years, that would be 925 + 2040 = 2965, which means he would then turn 40 in October, and come back for his last season, and get 3000 at age 40.

(I guess he could continue to play, and even at a reduced rate of maybe 100 hits per year for a couple of years, that would put him over 3200)

I wonder how many in the 3000 club have gotten to 3000 quicker than that pace?

The mean age is 39 for the 28 players getting to 3000 hits. Derek Jeter is 37. And he went 5 for 5 on the day he got to 3000.
