Michael Jackson. Most Influential?

For 2009? The home page on one of the computers is set to MSN and they tout MJ as one of the most influential people of 2009. WTF? He was clearly a big story, but did he do ANYTHING in 2009 other than die?

I saw that. My question is, where was MJ on the list last year? Because he didn't do anything this year that he didn't do the year before.

I've had it with the superlatives being slathered all over the guy. The guy was a tragic but talented freak whose death initiated the biggest Emperor's New Clothes parade maybe in the history of the world.

If the claim is that his death did more to trigger denial and delusion than any other event this year or decade, then I might just have to agree with that.

Jackson was not a hero. His music was the mainstreamiest of mainstream pop which means he likely wasn't cutting edge or particularly innovative.

He (almost literally) melted down right before everyone's eyes, but we don't want to talk about that. We want to gather in the tens of thousands and tell lies about someone whose music we liked. Perhaps the denial lets the adoring fans off the hook, at least in their own minds and hearts, for being so willfully cursory in their choice of idols.

Rant over.

Quincy Jones would differ.

The guy hadn't been musically relevant for years. In his later years, more known for his bizarre behavior, self-loathing, self-mutilation, and brushes with the law. Tragic figure = yes. Someone to be touted as "most influential?" Give me a break.

I believe Tiger Woods is the most influential person. He has convinced many other professional athletes to be more discreet when screwing around on their wives.

The dude was a superstar for 39 frickin years.

Every R&B singer out there today has some part of their act from Michael Jackson.

He is one of the all time great musicians and entertainers and to try and deny that is just silly.

Did Michael Jackson ever play any music? I thought he was pretty much a singer and dancer. I assume he actually wrote some music or at least arranged it, but I wasn't aware he was a musician.

There is no denying that he was a hugely popular entertainer and that he influenced dance video. Perhaps he was very influential to other entertainers, but it pretty much ends there and he did nothing in 2009 that influenced anybody unless he molested some more little boys in this calendar year.

Nick, Howard Stern has a tape of Jackson recording "Billie Jean".

It's amazing how he reworks and changes the song in a few short minutes. "Quincy...I need more bottom". The total feel of the tune evolves as you are listening. it's almost creepy.

I don't disagree with the 2009 stuff though.

But, the ************ was something special. I have never bought one of his records, but he was special.

But was he one of the most influential people of 2009?

Anyone who thinks he was has some infatuation issues. If being influential in 2009 is based on a lifetime body of work, then there are probably several hundred politicians in just this country whose lifetime achievements influence us daily much more than Michael Jackson ever did. If you get into medicine, science, religion, philosophy (meh, not so much in this country), architecture, engineering, warfare, etc., etc... ...

I don't care to argue about his lifetime impact on music as I just don't have any desire to ownn the grand prize for winning the argument. Besides, we've already had that pointless debate and no one took home any prizes. But, for the sake of argument, let's say he was the most influential musician (or whatever he was) ever to walk the planet. He didn't do **** in 2009!

The Link What Big Will was refering to.

Kind of reminds me of the studio takes from Pet Sounds by the Beach Boys, which were pretty amazing, as well.
