I think the consensus on the thread was to get traps, bait them with a peanut butter/bacon grease/bacon bits concoction but don't set them. Place them in areas of heavy traffic (where you see the rat poop) perpindicular to the wall, let the bait be tested for a few days and then set the suckers when the rats/mice get comfortable.
Also, you should place them along walls as mice/rats rarely walk across open spaces. Also find all entry points and seal them up otherwise you'll get them back.
We've got them too and they're driving our Jack Russell crazy. We've got the traps baited but not set yet. Another thing that seems to be working for us a little are hanging these Hot Shot things (I'm not sure if that's what they are) in the attic. You can get 'em at Home Depot and apparently they put out an odor that drives out flying bugs, etc. It's supposedly effective against rats/mice too. We've had them up there for two days and the dog has stopped scratching the walls and chewing the paint off the floor-level air vents.
BTW, the thread said an exterminator would likely run you $800 or so and would just do the above (not the hanging ****).
Yeah, that was me with the mice and I started that thread when they first made their presence known.
My problem is that I dont have easy access to my attic (no ladder). There was debate about whether I had rats or mice. Update -- A week ago one of the critters found its way into our box fan and decided to stand up and stretch. Bad decision, new box fan. I lean towards mice at this point.
ive seen some signs of mice around my apt. I noticed that stray cats were roaming around my apt so i have begun sitting out cans of tuna w/ traces of tuna left in them in hopes of the hangin around a lil while and takin care of the lil f'rs...... we'll see what happens. After the first night, the tuna can was completely cleaned out... either a bum found it or a cat was lured.
