I've never been, but my wife and I are going for about a week in April. It's for a conference, so much of my time will be spent listening to other dorks drone on and about inane topics during the day, and trying to avoid said dorks socially during the evening.

We are staying at the Intercontinental, which is, as I understand, in the more business-oriented area. Does anyone have any recommendations for restaurants, pubs, or general things to do around there? Are we going to need to rent a car to do anything fun, or is there reasonable taxi service/things to do in walking distance?

Any thoughts are appreciated, especially if they involve places I can go to get good beer.

I love hanging out in Coconut Grove.

Im not a huge fan of South Beach, too many tourists and too many Euro Trash people that are extremely rude
If you have never been to Miami you owe it to yourself to check out South Beach at least once.

My favorite bar on South Beach to catch a Drink, watch some games and look at talent is Mangos. That might not be everyone style, but there are a bunch of different places that will fit your style. Whats cool about South Florida is that no matter where you go (Ft Lauderdale, South Beach, Coconut Grove) there will be some major league talent..

Coconut Grove is a little more laid back and is located near the University of Miami in a very nice part of town. There are a bunch of bars, restaurants and upscale shopping in an area they call the Coco Walk.
Coconut Grove is where the natives go to hang out, South Beach is for the tourists.
