Well, I haven't seen them play, but I hear they are athletic. At first glance, it seems like our primary objective will be to stop McClinton. Not only did he go off for 38 points (including 32 in the second half) against St. Mary's, he is their leading scorer at 17.4 points per game. He's listed at 6'1" and 185 and their other guards are about the same size, so we should be able to put any of 3 guards on him. I wouldn't be surprised if Mason gets the assignment, so DJ and AJ can save it for the offensive end.
DJ was kind of quiet today, so I expect he'll step it up a notch on Sunday. This may also be a big game for Damian. Their younger forwards may have their hands full with him.
They are athletic enough to give us a game, but I think we win on talent and coaching.
Although the Longhorns had 11 rebounds today, that was more than balanced out by 17 assists. I believe that at a point in the first half Texas had 9 assists and only 2 or 3 turnovers. Pittman had 4 TOs. The ratios were excellent for Augustin and Mason, the former being something which has not been true all season.
In case you haven't noticed, the Longhorns assist to TO ratio over the past 4 or so games has been as good or better than at any other point during the season. Both Augustin and Mason have been putting up some solid numbers. The result is a good FG% streak, including the KU game.
If the starters can shoot a decent % from the field on Sunday, we should be in pretty good shape. Augustin and Atchley stunk from the field today (an all too common fact for CA recenty which is disappointing in light of his stellar FG% in some tight games earlier in the season).
Johnson's absence may have an impact against the athletic Canes, although Wangmene's contributions have recently improved to the point the loss of GJ is not so great.
"..., the Longhorns assist to TO ratio over the past 4 or so games has been as good or better than at any other point during the season."
That's significant. Also agree that Wangmene could be huge. With GJ questionable, it would really help if two of these three players would have really solid games each time out: Wangmene, Chapman, and Pittman. Was esp good to see that Dexter played so well and would like to see him build on that performance.
I think Mason is going to be the key that carries us far in this tournament. He has been unbelievable. Not only has his defense been outstanding but he has been completely unafraid to drive the ball to the basket. I'm amzed at his lateral quickness on defense and how its almost impossible to get around him.
Going into next year I think Mason has the chance to be a really special player. His only problem is he can't let his confidence slip when his shot is not falling, but I think he's making a lot of progress with that. Our problem was that we have been so spoiled with great freshman and sophomores that we forgot it takes some guys a couple years before they become badasses.
I only now visited the canes website, and one statistic really jumped out at me: this team has some incredible free throw shooters.
Clearly, these percentages from several of their players would indicate that we would do well not to foul too often, and not to get behind late in the game:
Even several who 'struggle' can produce. For example, King (68.9%), Graham (56.1%), Rios (57.1%). Of all their players, Collins at 49% is definitely the one you want to see shooting FT's.
being technologically challenged, i tried to edit the format, couldn't figure out how to do so quickly, and left it 'as is' (though I did edit one pt of content)
We will need to rebound well. They rotate their players quite frequently and have 6 players getting over 20 minutes/game and 4 more average about 16 minutes/game. They have a deep bench. Thus I don't think you can focus on 1 player too much and expect to win. I would rather the horns focus on the boards.
