Merle Haggard at the Paramount

Good show on Wednesday night, although it was eerily similar to a UT game - got drunk somehow and pissed off the girlfriend and the bluehairs in attendance - few questions -
1) Who were the brothers who opened?
2) Was that Merle's son to the stage left of the steel guitar (kid in the cap).
3) Who was the older guy who played just before Merle, one of the Strangers, I'm guessing.

Thanks.

I was there but I can't help a lot:

1. I didn't catch the name of the brothers from North Carolina, but I thought they were very good especially at imitating Hank Williams and Elvis Presley.

2. Yes, that was Merle's son playing guitar and he was dam good. I beleive Noel was the son who sang a couple of songs, and the one playing guitar might have been Marty.

3. I don't know the name of the old guy that sang a couple of songs but Norm Hamlet played steel, Doug Colosio played piano, and Abe Manuel, Jr. has been the longtime fiddle and mandolin player for The Strangers.

And I agree with you, I thought it was a great show. Merle will be back in Texas at Willie Nelson's 4th of July Picnic in Selma on the 4th and in Houston on the 5th.

Good for you guys getting to go.

Now that is what country music sounds like.

Most of the stuff that has come out in the last 20 or so years is pure crap.

Drag:

You are exactly right. As far as I am concerned country music was only produced from 1930-1975 or so. Its now extinct.

At the top of my list would be Hank Williams Sr. followed by Bob Wills, George Jones, and Merle.

My top 10 would be:

1. Bob Wills
2. Hank Williams, Sr.
3. Merle Haggard
4. Buck Owens
5. Hank Thompson
6. George Jones
7. Ray Price
8. Ernest Tubb
9. Lefty Frizzell
10. Waylon Jennings

I will give Willie Nelson an honorable mention for his stuff from about 1965-1985. But I don't like much of his recent stuff.

george strait doesn't write his own stuff, and he barely plays the guitar. watch him. he just stands there holding it most of the time. strait's old stuff is great, but he has not had a single good album since the box set came out. "check yes or no" ruined him for me.

my list:

1. merle
2. don williams
3. bob wills
4. george jones
5. old willie stuff
6. johnny cash
7. waylon jennings
8. ray price
9. hank sr.
10. rascal flatts

Aren't those guys the spike-haired fratboy looking douchebags that probably drive 3 series?

Faron Young and Ferlin Husky need to be on this list somewhere.

Country music today is not country at all. It is alt rock if anything with country tinges. It is fine for people who like it, good for you. But you are way off base to consider the artists some are offering up as for old people. Trust me, the music of the legends will be played looooong after today's one hit wonders and music video makers tunes fade to Tyson's Bolivian.

Give some of these artists a listen if you think you like country music. I think you will find some you really enjoy to compliment your music collection. Your modern country type music is great for what it is and you like it, kudos. But don't dismiss the past when the music was amazing.

jerry jeff walker and robert earl keen don't even belong on the top 10 list of country singers with 3 names...much less all time.

I like Farobn Young and Ferlin Husky, wouldn't put them in the Top 10 or my favorites but can see how somebody could do so.

I didn't put Johnny Cash in my Top 10, because again, this was my personal Top 10 I like to listen to, not my statement of the 10 greatest of all time.

There is still good country music being made, just as there is still good folk, soul and pop - it's just not getting played on the radio anymore or making anyone rich.

It is interesting how the artists that came up in the late 50s and early to mid 60s, in a bunch of traditional music fields, became the zenith of those genres.

well i saw REK at stubbs on friday...
how did i miss merle being in town.

I am going to kill this thread for not mentioning Marty Robbins.

For me:

1) Willie

2) Marty Robbins

3) Patsy Cline

4) Don WIlliams

5) Johnny Cash

6) Dwight Yoakum

7) George Jones

8) Charlie Rich

9) Emmylou Harris

10) Either Lorretta Lynn or Tammy Wynette

On my Mount Rushmore of country music I'd put Hank Williams Sr., Willie, Johnny Cash, and George Jones.

Billy Joe Shaver

From a song writing perspective, alone, he deserves mentioning. Waylon's "Honkytonks and Heros" album was full of BJ songs. I think all but one.

Also, Porter Wagoner and Dolly Parton deserve mentioning.

I'm surprised to not see Charley Pride. Ok well he'd probably be in my top 10, but there are so many GREAT's it would be hard to name just 10.

And to add from above, today's so called country is pathetically ridiculous. If I have to hear one more damn song from kenny chesney or brad paisley or any of the wannabe lynard skynard's out there i'm gonna puke.
