Menu items that you NEED to try

I know that Austin has a fair amount of good places to eat, but are there any items on the menu at various restaurants here in town that are 'can't miss'? I don't mean, 'Sushi at Musachino' or 'steak at flemmings', I mean something unique to that place, or exceptional at that place.

Chez Nous - The Fillet with red wine sauce. Normally, I detest sauce with my steak, but at CN, it is exceptional.

Thai Village - Nur Lard Nar (extra-spicy) - He makes the sauce on this extra think turning it almost into a gravy then, he flash fries the big think noodles. This is the best Thai dish in Austin. You might try it with the Tom Ka soup as he makes that really well.

Din Ho - Crispy Fish - this is a snapper, deep fried and whole. Its a traditional Cantonese dish and its great here.

Trulucks - Sesame Crusted Tuna - The Tamari sauce makes this so damn good.

Ranch 616 - Divorced Trout - I love this place and its not very expensive. This dish has two trout fillets one fried, one baked. Its very good.

You hit the nail on the head with Trulucks and Ranch 616. I think the crab cakes at Eddie V's are the best I've ever had. Their snapper with lump crab meat on top is pretty good too. Z Tejas used to have a snapper/trout dish with a pesto sauce on it that was incredible. Their fish tacos are also good. Haven't been in a while, though. I think my favorite meal anywhere -steaks, fish, etc, - is the beef fajita chille relleno at Trudy's. Damn good. The Pad Thai at the place on Guadalupe - Thai Palace I think, near Eckerds - is really good. I can't remember specific dishes, but I have never had a bad meal at Vespaio or Mars.

Crabmeat Gumbo at Gumbo's

Cedar Door mex martinis seem to be getting more watered down by the day. Once a stellar drink. Not so anymore. A Patron Silver martini at Trudy's is the ticket.

i am adding a reply to my post about the philly cheesesteak at delaware sub. it is still the best i have ever had but i have to comment on a bad experience there recently.

i live close to the delaware subs off mesa & spicewood so i go there somewhat often. i go there instead of subway or quizno. so the other day, i met some friends there for dinner. as i was leaving, one of the workers there came outside and started bitching me out b/c he said that i hit his car with my car door. i had not done that at all and he was bitching me out. i told him that i didn't do it and that if my car door touched his, i was sorry but he continued to ***** me out and got my licensce plate number and claimed he was going to call it in. i would have asked to talk to the manager but there didn't appear to be one.

anyway, i have never had that happen before and i haven't been there since nor do i expect to go anytime soon. i have likely told about 10 of my friends this already and it happened last week. i'll tell all my friends likely. <G>

the "Hot Rock" at uchi sushi. They serve Kobe (wagyu) beef with a ponzu sauce and a very hot rock. You sizzle them at your table. Fun and they taste great.

I went to Eddie V's for Valentine's Day and had the Hong Kong style Sea Bass. It was fantastic. The bread pudding was quite possibly the best I have ever had.

If any of you ******** don't like the mac and cheese at Luby's, you are either commies, sooners, or both.

Other dishes that make my list:

The chicken-fried steak at Cafe 290

The beef short ribs (when they have them) at John Meuller's

Wom Kim's Peach Pudding at Hyde Park

The duck and sausage gumbo at Castle Hill

The diver scallops at Aquarelle

The cheese enchiladas, with fresh Texas toast, at the Dart Bowl

The Kung Pao tofu at Whole Foods (I am a redneck tofu hater, and I love this stuff)

The turtle soup at Commander's Palace in New Orleans (hey, it's a bit of a trip, but this may be my single favorite dish in the world).

Austin:
Irish Nachos (seasoned home fries topped with cheddar/ jack cheese, jalapenos, etc.) at Kirby Lane Cafe

Beef ribs at Iron Works BBQ

Breakfast tacos at Austin Tamale House

Chocolate malt at Culver's

Queso blanco at Waterloo Icehouse

Popcorn shrimp at Catfish Parlour (extremely addictive)

Fried catfish at Dot's Place on Friday nights (all you can eat)

Frito Chili Pie at Texas Chili Parlor

Shrimp gumbo at Gumbo's downtown

Crawfish etouffe at Louisiana Longhorn Cafe in Round Rock

And I second the nods to Philly Cheesesteak at Delaware Subs and Hyde Park Grill fries.

Other Cities/Towns:
Chicken Fried Steak at Jody's in Temple

Frozen margarita at Gaido's in Galveston - the best I've ever had (it's made from scratch, not a pre packaged mix)

Sausage kolache at Hruska's in Ellinger

Dang, I'm really hungry now.
