Mental Illness

Yet another tragic example of the epidemic of mental illness that goes largely untreated yesterday at the community college in Cypress, Texas.

I was very busy yesterday, yet it seems it was buried down in most news sites and stations outside of Texas. I think this is intentional with Obama's big gun control push this week with him propping up Sandy Hook victims for political purposes.

Our politicians and media continue to fail the real ills of our country. Am I wrong?

I think it's time for us to have a serious national conversation about background checks before someone can purchase a knife. It might also be time for us to start registering knives and put limits on how many knives people should be able to buy and how sharp the knives can be.
For example, even though only two people live in our household, I have a Kitchen Aid knife set in my kitchen that holds an astounding 11 knives and one pair of scissors
. What justifiable reason do two people have to own so many knives?

Furthermore, these aren't flimsy butter knives. These are sharp enough to cut through flesh, and some of them are large, ugly, "military style" assault-knives. (You should see me assault a loaf of bread or a block of cheese with one of these. It's not pretty.) And Kitchen Aid so callously disregarded public safety that it included a sharpener with the set so we could keep them from naturally dulling over time.

Worst of all, the government has no idea that we even own these knives, as we did not have to register them with any federal, state, or local agency. We also didn't have to pass ANY criminal or mental health background checks before acquiring them. We simply walked into Bed, Bath & Beyond, plunked down some cash, showed no ID, and walked out with the knives with no one knowing or even considering the havoc we'd go onto wreak on everything from meats all the way to raw vegetables. That simply cannot be allowed to happen. The federal government HAS to take action to keep that sort of thing from happening over and over again.

Nobody has need for assault knives. I'd wager that 90% of Americans can protect themselves just fine with a steak knife.

Can't we think of the kids?

Meanwhile, Obama can't stop dancing on the graves of the children from Sandy Hook. I wondered why the parents of these children were important enough to get an invite to fly on AF1, while the hundreds of parents of childred that were killed by gun violence in Chicago were given the finger. Does the African American urban community not care, do they not know about their children dying from guns at a much larger rate compared to suburban white communites? The politicians certainly don't, or they'd be going after handguns instead of the "assault" rifle.

The hypocrisy of the gun debates has polluted the air.

I too have a block of knives, and to up the ante a CLEAVER that will cut a *****.

Now if I could only get my hand on a sword...

Has anyone seen the movie "We Need to Talk About Kevin"
It has some eerie similarities to Sandy Hook and all the gun shootings--weird kid, parents encourage hobby to bond etc. he locks students in a gym at school and picks them off, one by one.

But Kevin uses a bow and arrows. It is a good movie that I saw about 2 weeks before Sandy Hook, but it shows that if someone wants to kill a lot of people, they are going to find a way.

Obama needs to quit hiding behind these precious children and address jobs, budget and oh, maybe spend a bit of time on the debacle that is the "Affordable" health care act.

That's exactly my point, Deez. It's not about gun control. It's not about protecting our children (at least the white ones).

It's about votes. It's about power.

the Kitchen Aid knife set is dangerous, I grant you, but my gf bought me a KA mixer a few weeks ago and they are exponentially heavier than all the knives put together,
You could easily kill somebody by hitting them on the head with it,

But all I have done with it is bake cookies, really tasty ones,. I did register the mixer when I bought the ice cream maker attachment. I have very mixed feelings about the government seizing my mixer.

They can take my mixer when they pry my cold, sticky buttery fingers from it.

You guys are missing the larger issue. What about background checks on knife shows? Good grief, are you aware of what the average boy scout packs? Not only can he cut you, but he can also loosen a screw.

I visited with a suburban mom who is almost superhuman in her efforts to mobilize resources to help underprivileged kids in schools the week of the Newtown tragedy.. The woman described the educators and friends she deals with as numb and horrified in the week after the school shooting. I'm not insensitive, but admittedly on this shooting and others on the like, I'm prone to look at a map and imagine tens of thousands of schools operating as comparatively safe places for teachers and their children in their charge. Certainly it would be completely unpolitical to ignore this tidal wave of emotion and the apolitical in this country have little say in government. The NRA and their folks used it as an opportunity to push for more armed citizens ready to confront evil, just like the gun controllers saw a need for more restraint in who has access to guns and the types of weapons easily obtained.

I got my first rifle, a .22, when I was eight and I've owned firearms ever since-----for nearly 60 years. The idea of putting a bunch of controls on access is abhorrent to me but I can easily understand why those who have not grown up in a gun culture think the rest of us are nuts

Fortunately, this guy didn't have a semi-auto or fully auto (with trigger lock) electric carving knife with quickly interchangeable blades, could have been much, much worse.

Thanksgiving Day would never be the same for most of us again if he did.
