Exciting to see the men's squad ranked 5th in the nation, with four players in the current top 100 (Damico and Corrie top 25) and a top 10 doubles team. Great results this past week with convincing wins over higher ranked (at the time) USC and sweep of then #10 Alabama. The loss to #2 GA was a good match and could have gone either way imo. While I think UVA is the clear #1 at this point the top squads are closer than in past years....the top 6 or 7 programs all have an equal number of players (four) in the collegiate top 100, but I think the Horns may have a slightly better upside given their youth and the fact our top two players are freshmen and our third ranked team member (#53 Kutrovsky) is a sophmore. I am really hoping for a strong finish from the men this season.
I am not sure what to make of the women at this point. I had expected us to be a top 10 program this season. Corvic was one of the top freshmen in the country last year and opened with a #19 pre-season ranking this fall. We actually had four players ranked at the beginning of the season (Corovic, Lancaster, Zauft and Davison), and a top recruit in Mello that I thought would be ranked in short order also. New rankings were just released and for the first time I can recall we don't have a single ranked player, and the team has fallen to #27.
I still think this squad is a good one and I'm hopeful they will come on strong this Spring. We certainly have a good coach and lots of talent, and I don't think the current scenario accurately reflects where the program is at. The next three contests will tell us more including today's match-up against #16 William & Mary. We also face #5 Florida on Sunday and #14 Fresno State the following week. I think we are going to do better than our current ranking indicates we might...all three are home matches so I hope there is a good turnout to support our ladies.
