Men's Tennis vs. Virginia

Just wanted to mention that the men's tennis team will be playing Virginia at noon on Sunday. Virginia is currently the #1 team in the nation and it will be a GREAT match. If you have never been to a tennis match, you will be impressed with both the level of play and the team that represents this University. Let's go Horns!

What a freakin match!! We lost 3-4 to the Cavaliers but had chances to beat the #1 team in the country. Two match points at the #4 singles spot and lost that match in 3 sets. Damico and Ed fought and unfortuntely lost 9-7 in the deciding doubles match. Singles were played first, and Texas could have and really should have sealed it there. Kellen was cramping after a set and a half and lost, Josh Zavala lost a tough 3 setter but had to fight back from 0-5 in 3rd, and had two match points at 4 that could have won it. That kid at 4 for UVA was a great player. What a match!
This group seems a little banged up, but if they get healthy, and get a big win under their belt, they can get hot and return to the final 4. They can play with and beat anyone in the country.

Agree that we could have won this match, but definitely a great performance by the Horns. It shows this team is one of the best in the country and has the talent to make another run at a national title. Hopefully they will improve their ranking slightly by the end of the season so their tourney seeding improves a little also. And...the squad has just one senior in the starting rotation, with Corrie and Damcio just sophmores

, so they should be even better next year!

I think we have signed two Texas guys and a young man from Kansas. I need to look them up, but 3 Americans, with two of them local to a men's collegiate tennis team is not the norm for an annual recruiting class. I've heard great things about them!

For the class of '09, Texas has signed 3 Texans and 1 from Kansas.

Benjamin Chen - Spring, TX - blue chip recruit
Chris Camillone - Austin, TX - 5 star recruit
Grant Fleming - Overland Park, KS - 5 star recruit
Daniel Whitehead - Sugarland, TX - 5 star recruit

Thus far for the Class of '10, I noticed that another blue star recruit has verballed to Texas. David Holiner from Dallas is currently ranked #9 in the nation.

it looks like texas has a good class coming in....in the national senior rankings chen is #27, whitehead 32, fleming 72 and camillone 78. four top-80 recruits is a nice haul...i didn't check the full list but did look at the top 12 and no school signed more than one, so our class ought to hold up pretty well nationally.

Thanks for the info. It was exactly what I was wanting to see too! We are going to be loaded and we know they are well coached with great facilities and support.

Texas has the #4 ranked signing class for '09. Stanford has the #1 class with 3 blue chip recruits and one 3 star.

Ben Chen may be able to step in as a frosh to play #6. He hasn't quite finished growing and needs to bulk up. If he can get himself into a College frame, I think he could be a solid #6. He needs to get bigger though. I see him as a Josh Zavala type role.

Daniel Whitehead might be able to contribute maybe in 2-3 yrs. He's more of a grinder. He'll win u some tough matches because of his style but also could lose some matches he shouldn't be losing.

Grant Fleming and Chris C are kind of up in the air. They have potential to break the roster at some point, but if Texas wants to remain on top, I am not sure if they will break #5/6. Maybe a doubles specialist?

I think we did good recruiting role players in 2009, but the rankings above don't figure in the Foreign players many of the other universities will be picking up.

The 2010 recruiting is REALLY important. Besides Olivier Sajous, the recent recruits/pick-ups don't jump off the bat and leave immediate impression that they will be Top 50-100 players. We lose top players in Dimi and Sajous and Zavala has been rock solid at 6.

There are prolly 4-6 players in the Top 15 that are considering Texas. I think it is essential we pick up another elite Blue Chip (Top 10). The state of Texas has a good number of athletes to pick from that year so I think it is highly likely we will recruit well in 2010.

I no longer see Grant Fleming as an '09 Commitment. Anybody know the '411' on him??

I do see that David Holiner, Class of '10 ranked #12, will enroll in Spring '10.
