Men's Tennis Sweet Sixteen

Against OU, Texas took doubles point but has struggled in singles. Kutrovsky was his usual dominating self at number one but Damico and Corrie both went down in straight sets and Andersen is down a set and a break for OU with the Sooner serving to win the match and have OU go up 3-2. Mladenov is up a set and Zavala is on serve in the first set at 5-5.

Texas will have to hold on to Mladenov's match and find a way to win one of the other matches or they will drop to an unseeded Sooner team that already upset 14 seed Tech in the round of 32. Will be a late night tonight for the men.

Andersen breaks back to tie second set at 5. Mladenov on serve in second set at 1-1; Horns need Mladenov to hold on and either Andersen to come back or Zavala to come through with the fourth point.

This one comes down on Zavala's racquet. That is the match to watch.

Andersen is headed to a tie brake for second straight set; Zavala up 6-5 in first set. Mladenov is now down a break 3-1 in second set. Exciting late night stuff.

Earlier today BU beat aggy 4-1 to make it to elite 8. Weird to see two Big XII matchups in the sweet sixteen.

Andersen loses second set tie brake and match. OU now leads 3-2 and is one point from the upset.

Even worse Mladenov now down 4-1 in second set but with a set in hand. Zavala leads 6-5 in first.

Zavala now in tie brake for first set. Horns must win both matches still on the courts or their NC hopes will die in the round of 16.

Zavala takes first set tie brake. Mladenov is down 4-2 but just one break in second set. Horns need both of these young men to step it up to stay alive. Tough to lose at 2, 3 and 4 singles but the Horns have depth at 5 and 6 and that is where this matchup will be decided.

Mladenov breaks back to get to 4-4 in the second and back on serve. Zavala takes game one of second set up 1-0 with set in hand. It is 12:30 in the morning in Georgia and it is still anyone's tie.

Georgia upset Florida 4-2 so the winner of this tie gets the Bulldogs on their home courts in the elite 8. BU is up against 2 seed Tennessee in the elite 8. On the other side of the draw 1 seed UVA continues to plow through the filed and gets UCLA in the elite 8 while Ohio State at the 4 seed gets 5 seed Southern Cal.

Last spot in elite 8 is this tie winner.

Mladenov is in a second set tie brake with chance to win match. Zavala is serving at 3-3 in the second set of his match. Big chance here for Horns in both matches.

The collapse at 2 3 and 4 singles may yet haunt the Horns.

Mladenov now down on serve at 1-2 in the third. As the matches drag on past 1 in the morning the Longhorn hopes for a third straight final four in mens tennis are beginning to really be in danger.

Mladenov holds serve and Zavala gets huge break to go 2-2 in the third and up 5-4 in second respectively. A lot of tennis still to play but back on track in both matches.

Zavala drops second set tie brake and is headed to a deciding third set (Texas is 1 for 5 in tie brakes tonight, not good). Zavala's match will decide the tie should Mladenov hold serve to get Texas' third point. Heading toward 2 in the morning with late night tennis.

Disastrous day.

Mladenov cant serve out the match then drops two straight games after being broken to lose the third set 7-5 and the match. Texas falls to OU 4-2 and the run to a third straight final four comes to an end in the sweet sixteen.

This was an incredibly disappointing result tonight. The Horns tooks the doubles point and number one singles but couldnt win at 2, 3 or 4 and ultimately lost the deciding point at number 6 singles in 3 sets after being up a set. Kutrovsky will have his individual shot in the singles and in doubles with Zavala but this result will sting for a while.

Combined with the softball team cratering Touchdown's comment above is far too appropriate, disastrous day.

Great season by the Horns but this ending is a big disappointment. We should have gone much farther in both tennis and softball. I knew our softball team wasn't ready for an NC yet but I was hoping for more experience for them. The tennis team I thought had a shot at the NC so this is more bitter. A terrible day.
