Not sure how we're ahead. All I've seen since I turned it on is us fail to pass to wide open guys, swat shots out of bounds unnecessarily to give KU the ball back, and stand next to offensive players watching the shot instead of boxing out. Maybe I should turn the game back off?
Wow, 35 seconds of great defense wasted by the offensive possession that followed. I can't even blame Barnes for that one; how do you have 5 guys all get out of top-level high school programs with so little idea of how to play a common end-game situation of down by 3 with the ball? Before the game, none of us would have considered it a shame to lose by a few points to one of the top teams in the nation, but the way we lost this one was pretty sad.
This team finds ways to lose, UCLA, Baylor, WVA and now Kansas. That is how you find yourself 8-9 instead of 12-5 and on your way to a losing season instead of a tournament berth.
It's getting to the point that I would be more surprised at them holding a lead, than losing one. From McClellan's comments after the game, I think the team may feel the same way.
Texas right now seems to be a bunch of good DNA without a lot of heart.
A few of them play full-blast all the time; but some, with great raw athletic talent, just seem to look like that's going to be enough --- just show up.
Kansas was on a 2nd period quick break, our big trotted down to the lane at the other end near the free-throw line and kind of stopped with his back to the oncoming transition, and acted as if "okay, I'll just wait here until KU shows up", but KU already had a forward past him near the baseline (that our big didn't see).
Fortunately our guards were harrassing KU's transition so they couldn't get it down in time, but the apparent non-concern by some players on our team is evident. Kind of like "whatever, I'm just waitin' to get a slam dunk so I can get a highlight replay on ESPN."
Then they'll exit Austin early, go D-League, and wind up in Europe for a few years.
Some of them just don't look like they're really interested to play D-1 ball in Austin. Maybe they look and up and see TJ's and KD's jerseys and dream that that's going to be them one day.
But those were two REALLY special players, who busted their ASSES before, during, and after their time in Austin, in addition to having great God-given talent.
I know these kids are Frosh/Soph for the most part, but we've had a bunch of young guys who came in and worked hard to earn early playing time, not just resting on raw talent. It's frustrating, because other programs/coaches periodically have great raw young talent and still win.
I agree with almost everything that's been written above. And I could speak at length about the team's failings..... But I won't.
The one thing that troubles me the most is that there were enough empty Longhorn seats to supply KU fans with an almost home court advantage! After standing the entire game, and yelling and screaming until I was hoarse, my heart just sank when the chant of "Let's go, Jayhawks" was as loud as anything our crowd could muster up.
Why is it that only the O-Zone can get involved from the opening buzzer? For any of you that are reading this post, then this message is definitely not intended to apply to you. You're here, and you obviously care.
But what UT fans need to recognize is that for a struggling team, the crowd can make the difference, and the players feed off of that raw emotion and energy. I have to wonder, how hard it must be to give 100% for fans that only come to the game to "watch" and not "participate?"
Tell your friends and fellow UTers......get off your butt, and scream a little. It'll help clear up that Cedar Fever, and regardless of the outcome of the game, you'll leave knowing, at the very least, YOU gave it your all!
If you can't say that for yourself, why are you asking it of the players?
Just so I am clear on your point......the players owe YOU, as an alumni? And, the alumni/crowd/fans/lack there of, are blameless?
Thought so..... You've just illustrated my point!
Winning at the collegiate level takes more than the players on the court or field. It takes the entire university community of fans!
To state that you will only actively support our guys if they are winning, and "have earned your support," is just sad. There's a term for that....it's called being a "FAIR WEATHER FAN!"
I just know that regardless of the final score on any game, any Horns' teams will have my loyal support....and that very support, might just be enough, sometimes, to change the L to a W!
