Memphis = Phi Slamma Jamma disappointment

Both will probably go down as the greatest teams to never win a title. Both also lost the national championship games in heartbreaking fashion. Lots of similarities in terms of up tempo style and great players. I feel really bad for Memphis. They should have won this game.

Except Kansas was a one seed and NC State was a 6? Kansas beating Memphis was no great upset.

This was no where near the same. Houston getting beat was a big upset, this was not. Kansas is an up tempo team, and they have some very good players also.

And no they shouldn't have won. Free Throws are a part of the game, you have to be complete in ALL areas. And when Memphis weakness showed, KU still had to do their part and hit their shots. There were no gift wrapped buckets giving to Kansas, they hit some clutch shots. They won because of their complete game and poise, it is what it is.

Joey Dorsey bought himself a nasty dose of karma. First, the shoulder block on KU's Aldrich after a dunk. Then, he held the ball, pointed to the crowd, and showboated after another dunk.

When you act like that, you're begging to foul out hedging a screen 25 feet from the basket and to then have to watch helplessly while your team loses in OT.

Memphis should have won. They were up by 9 with 2:12 to go. They missed free throws which was an achilles heel of the Phi Slamma Jamma teams.

If they should have won, they would have won. The game doesn't stop at the 2 minute mark, and neither do runs in basketball. Again, free throws are a part of the game.

its no the same, first of all, the talent on these two teams favored kansas, they had more experience and more depth. the talent overall in college hoops has greatly improved over that time period and those UH teams were as dominant on a day by day level as those early georgetown teams...they murdered teams...the nc st. upset imo was bigger than the villanova over georgetown game. villanova won because it shot about 70% for the game. it was amazing that georgetown still almost won. nc st. won because of probably one of the greatest coaching blunders in history...going into a spread offense with that talent against that team...oh well, imo kansas technically had the better team and they won.

It was similar in some ways, but the two teams were more equal-Kansas would probably win 4 or 5 out of ten games against Memphis, but how many times would NC State have won against Cougar High-few would have predicted even one out of ten.
And I sure don't feel bad for Memphis, and found myself rooting for KU at the end.

Talent wise I'd say the two were fairly even. Kansas definitely had an edge in the front court. And in the backcourt, Rose and CDR are better than Chalmers, Robinson, and Rush, but not by that much. Plus Rose is a frosh.

This game was just as much (if not more) Memphis blowing it than Kansas winning it. I don't care who's playing and how much people dislike Memphis, when you're up 9 with 2 minutes to play, the only way the other team wins the game is if you help them out in some fashion. Missed free throws, turnovers, defensive breakdowns, whatever.

I'm not going to say they SHOULD have won, because obviously that gets taken out of context here, but I don't see how anyone could say Memphis didnt choke this one away.

Memphis also commited a costly turnover on the inbounds in the last two minutes which led to a three. This was the play. If that didnt happen kansas had no shot - even with the poor Memphis FT shooting.

Kansas was pretty much in control of things until aboutt he 10:00 mark of the second half, then Memphis took over, seemed to be on its way to glory, and then they a) blew free throws, committed a pair of ridiculous turnovers, and gave up some jumpers that they hadn't been giving up before. Not fouling on that last possesion was also a bed ****.

There as still OT, though, and there Kansas put Memphis out of its misery.

Kansas of '07 > NC State of '83

UH of '83 was probably better than both Kansas and Memphis from this year. But that doesn't matter in a championship game. It's who actually wins on the court that counts.

Georgetown from '85 was another big upset.

I obviously didn't mean how many of them are currently in the NBA. How many players on the current Kansas roster do you think will be drafted by the NBA? Do you think 4 players on Kansas' roster will be drafted? I'll even give you that 1 of NC State's was in the 3rd round which no longer exists and will re-phrase the question: Are there more than 3 players on this years Kansas roster that will be drafted to play in the NBA?

How many do you think will have long productive NBA careers? I'd guess at least one will have a very productive career, but how many more will?

NC State was a very underrated team in large part because one of their All-Conference players was injured for part of the season which affected their overall seeding and record and because they played very close games earlier in the tournament. UH still should have won, but don't make NC State out to be Davidson.

Why does having more future NBA draftees make you a better college team? Maybe 2007/2008 Memphis or North Carolina or UCLA will end up with more future NBA players than Kansas too.

Nope, the Phi Slamma Jamma collapse was one for the ages and it is the single biggest reason that Guy Lewis is not in the Hall of Fame. It is a shame too. I was rooting for UH back in the day because DeLoss had just dismantled our Men's Basketball to program. That's what I get for rooting for Cougar High I suppose.

UH 83 had Hakeem and Drexler and Larry Michauex who played a year or two or so in the nba but other than that they really had nothing else. Alvin Franklin a FR guard was a good player but the 2 Memphis guards are light years ahead of Franklin and Reid Gettys. I think the players today while lacking the superstar big man who goes pro after 1 and done are much superior to those of 24 years ago. They can all dribble and shoot from the outside, unlike the prior generation where the 3 pt shot was not even in use.
