Memphis chooses Pastner

Wow...I'm surprised that Memphis couldn't attract someone with previous Head Coaching experience. I don't know if Pastner was/is perceived as a shining star in assistant coaches circles, but I would rather take a chance on somebody like, say, Russ Springmann, over Josh Pastner. We'll see how that works for Memphis, I guess.

Wow, I now officially feel OLD....

This kid must have sold his soul to the devil because hes had a silver spoon in his mouth ever since he left Kingwood.

I graduated with this guy, we sucked when Josh played there. I lost respect for him when I heard his dad was heavy into that AAU BS. They setup some big tournament in Kingwood and all of a sudden Kingwood wins the state title (of course that PG when to AZ). Seemed kind of shady to me. But it started to make sense why there was a pipeline from Houston to AZ even before Josh got there (and why he was able to walk on). Not suprised to hear he was the top recruiter at AZ and Memphis. Probably a good hire for them just based on recruiting.

Good for him! HC position at 31. He without question is a rising star in the profession. UA may regret not hiring him.

Certainly, this is a good opportunity for Pastner. It's a tremendous thing to be offered a HC job as a 31-year old, not to mention that it's at a decent program like Memphis.

I'm sure that Memphis could have done better, though. Why not go after a guy like Gillispie, for example? Of course, they may very well have...but it hasn't been reported. BCG could really do some damage (in a good way, this time) at a place like Memphis.

Did you happen to catch the last 2 years that Billy Clyde coached?

Other than running a once proud program in the ground, and acting like an *** off the court, what do you think made him a good hire for a top program like Memphis?

Pastner is the real deal. Keep in mind guys like Pitino, Knight, Calipari, K became HCs at very young ages.....

He was the main recruiter for Memphis' class. The thinking is that he will be able to keep guys from leaving with Cal that are already on the roster, and that he may be able to keep some of the top recruits from this year.

If he hires Henry's dad that would keep at least two players.

Gillispie's failings at Kentucky are well documented. I have no rebuttal for the last two years. It is, however, one of the toughest jobs (from the pressure and expectations standpoint) in America. That has also been well documented. Gillispie has proven to be solid coach at A&M and able recruiter. Memphis is not one of the top programs in the country. There's a reason why they wound up hiring a 31-year old assistant with no head coaching experience on any level, while Arizona, despite botching things up with Floyd, wound up with Sean Miller. Arizona is a top program and Memphis, without Calipari, is not.

Putting Gillispie aside, I'm curious what makes you so confident that Pastner is the "real deal"? What's that based on? I honestly want to know. It can't be based on any sort of track record, in terms of coaching acumen. Recruiting would, I imagine, be his selling point.

I'm pretty sure that Pastner was on scholarship at Arizona. not that he actually played...

just like most top programs, recruiting has been the lifeblood for Memphis under Calipari. with Pastner, you know you'll get that. where was Memphis before Calipari got there? I guess they were pretty decent some time ago? point is that they were nothing in recent memory. Pastner gives them the opportunity to possibly keep the current class intact and likely bring in top flight talent in the future. whether or not he can coach them up might be a different story.

the AAU circuit is an unfortunate reality in college basketball. I'm certainly not willing to throw Pastner under the bus just because he was involved in AAU ball. some might argue that some of the players that Kingwood has "attracted" over the past few years is just as shady as AAU ball.

also, Pastner graduated from KW the same time I was at Humble. I had friends who couldn't even sniff our team that schooled him at the Y on West Lake Houston Pkwy. just sayin'.

There you go Hornhair.

I think you have something there.

Well, Memphis may step down in the sleeze zone, but they got their coach (plan C).

Let's be real and take a step back in time.

Most of you are too young, but let's talk about Guy B. Lewis of the Houston Cougar program. It was an awesome program at one time. They challenged for the NC three out of four years at one time. Then Guy Lewis retired. Oh no! What now?

Did Houston have a plan? Plan A: recruit the coach of Louisville. Plan B: Recruit the coach of Kansas. Plan C: land a sleeze ball that recruits well..

Come on. We're talking Memphis here. They go after the State School Coach (Pearl). Oh yeah, we got him. Really?

Houston is Cougar High and Memphis is Memphis. Why are so many people surprised?

Pastner is well thought of among young up and comming coaches. He has been an assistant for two very respected head coaches. He doesn't have the head coaching experience, but he could be a very good hire for Memphis. When I look at the big names that Memphis had available to chose from, none of them strike me as great hires.
