Memphis B-ball caught cheating (FB tie-in)

Well espn is reporting that the NCAA will require Memphis to forfeit its Final Four season from 2007-2008, which included a win over Texas in the Elite Eight. There are several reasons given, but much like FSU's recent indiscretions will only be punished by forfeiting past wins.

So for the football tie-in. This is yet another school being caught cheating red-handed by the NCAA, which is a feat in itself since the NCAA infractions committee seems to be made up of deaf, dumb, and blind individuals. But when are we going to start seeing some real penalties for being busted cheating. Clear USC football has some serious problems reaching back to Reggie Bush. OU got busted for Bomar and Big Red. FSU had the most widespread cheating that I can ever remember being discovered, when does the NCAA stop the wrist slapping???

I am sure that there are some problems at every school, but when things get this serious and then they are caught, why no punishment? This is rediculous. The FSU decision and the Memphis decision not only give coaches the message that cheating is ok, but that they need to do it to keep up. Derrik Rose and Reggie Bush were premium players that made an impact on their team. They also helped recruiting in subsequent years for their schools. So the message now presented is that cheating not only is safe, but pays off.

I have all the confidence in the world that a thorough investigation of Texas would find nothing to report of any significance, but why the hell should we be punished for following the rules?? We have the biggest athletic budget in the nation, if Texas wanted to buy half the top 100 recruits in the country we could out-bid everyone. Clearly we don't or we wouldn't lose so many recruits to OU, but the NCAA needs to at least make the playing field look even.

Sorry for the rant, but now a question, what do you think would be a fair punishment for Memphis? I for once agree with Skip Bailis (sp?) Calipari should be suspended for a year and Memphis should have schollys limited for a year or two. Nothing over the top, but lets see some serious penalties.

If that's what little Skippy Bayless says the penalties should be, then it make the first time ever that I have agreed with him.

Nice rant, BTW.

Does that mean we get the Final 4 appearance and the NCAA monies that do along with it? Conference USA owes the Big 12 some coin.

Are we going to hang another Final Four banner?
