Mellencamp asks McCain to Stop using his music

I hate that musician, actors, etc... feel the need to do crap like this. You make good music be happy that people of all walks of life and political persuasions like your product and pay money for it.

I'm just glad I didn't buy his record. As a republican, he might have asked me to return it, as it's clearly not meant for me.

what an idiot. i'm sure the dixie chicks wouldn't care if laura bush bought their latest album.

I was kerfuffled when Chevy used his "This Is Our Country" song in its ads, since Mellencamp reportedly wrote the song specifically for John Edwards rallies.

Thankfully, we have yet to hear complaints from the artists about Hillary's use of "The ***** is Back" or Obama's use of "Back in Black."

You can't blame a music artist for not wanting their music used in a way that they feel is disingenious use, by a politician they don't support.

Perhaps Ted Nugent could dust of "Cat Scratch Fever" for McCain... or use the theme from Rocky...

His music is meant for all Americans regardless of political affiliation. If the McCain campaign bought the rights to use the music then they should be able to play it. Most of the stuff I have heard from Mellencamp "This is our country" included is speaking about all Americans regardless of politics. Apparently Mr. Mellencamp does not believe this and should change any reference to americans to democrats as he believes his music should not be played to a republican audience.

Oh, and both sounds he is complaining about are written with a message of inclusion and an America for all. I guessing now Mellencamp only means all Democrats and does not include Republicans in his meaning of "all". It is hypocritical ******** to complain about McCain using songs that carry the message of a country for all Americans and then say you can't use it because I don't agree with your politics. Kind of hypocritical.

I agree with Shiner. If by "our country," he means "the democrat's country," he should say so. Although he does say "from the East coast to the West coast," maybe he meant to ignore all those red states in between.

I don't have a problem with Mellencamp not wanting his music used by a politician he doesn't support. It would appear to be within his rights to control this.

Did McCain's organization go through the proper channels and are paying to use the song?

and its not like he's getting on cnn and loudly denouncing mccain from the rooftops. link said he was "quietly reaching out to McCain and asking him to stop playing his tunes."

nothing wrong with that

This same thing happened in the 80s when Bruce Springsteen complained about Ronald Reagan using "Born in the USA" during his re-election campaign.

he has the right to ask them not to play it, however if McCain's people paid for the right to play it and Mellencamp's people cashed the check, then McCain has the right to tell Mellencamp to go to hell

I think McCain would be wise to make a bigger deal of this. He can use it as an example of partisan politics which are shutting down America, and talk about how he is going to unite Americans.

So an artist created art and doesn't want someone using it to promote something he doesn't believe in? Oh, the audacity!

If McCain's campaign purchased the rights, then Mellencamp doesn't have an argument. But he doesn't need to sell the rights to his music to anyone.

If Hilary started playing Toby Keith songs at her rallies and he threw a fit about it (and Mellencamp's not even being vocal about this), I would side with him too.
