We do not need people like this at Texas. He and his mom think he is bigger than any university. He is a football player. They come and go. The school will always be there and is bigger than any player will ever be.
I've been starting to think for several weeks that McFarland's recruitment was sounding like a soap opera. The NY Times story from yesterday confirms those thoughts.
The story was written by someone with an okie background and agenda, the same guy who did all the D. Scott stories last year. That being said, it doesn't mean McFarland and his mom didn't say all of the things they're alleged to have said.
This isn't sour grapes. UT has two very good defensive tackles committed to the upcoming recruit class and will be fine at the position. I now believe we dodged a bullet with McFarland. Him and okie are a good fit, which means he would not have fit in at UT.
I think he would have done well on the 40 acres, but the young man made his choice and it doesn't help the Longhorns to come on these boards and sound bitter or jealous. We've recruited very well at DT for the last two years. Let JM be excited about where he's going and let's be excited about the players excited to come here.
After we got our two defensive lineman early I really did not care if he came to UT or not. I never had a good felling about his fit with Texas anyway. Too much drama with this Lufkin recruit and his family for me. I appreciate the fact that they made a decision to end the soap opera. I like our recruiting class of defensive lineman as it is.
The one thing I am pleased about is that we are reading about this on Dec 26 and not Feb 4. What I hate is prolonging an announcement until Feb and then rubbing the other team’s nose in it (RP).
I think Texas got out worked and OU’s Shipp decided to make a call everyday until JM made a decision.
We got off track with the Mom and could not get realigned.
From NY Times article:
"Before the visit, Adams called Texas and asked to speak with Brown. The associate head coach, Mac McWhorter, told her that she could talk only to him.
That bothered her because she had wanted to talk to Brown and commend him for the Longhorns’ dismissal of a player who had posted a racial slur on his Facebook page about President-elect Barack Obama."
"Adams initially favored Texas because of its prestige and because of what she perceived as its stronger academic offerings. But Shipp delivered on his promise. He sent her e-mail messages every day, building the foundation for what would become a friendship.
When Adams did not reply, Shipp sent follow-up messages. In one, he wrote, “Ms. Adams, Haven’t heard from you in a few days.” "Adams, meanwhile, received only occasional letters and e-mail messages from Texas coaches."
So it all came down to an insecure mother who was enjoying her moment in the spotlight. Nice.
Wow...that NYT story makes everyone but the OU coaches look bad. It sounds to me like his mother is just one of those "entitlement" type people.
This is gonna be another Bomar situation IMO. Adrian Peterson made a bad choice, but I never felt he thought he was "above" the rest of it. This is much more like the Bomar story.
Here is an interesting response to the situation from Geoff Ketchum. A lot of it is just conjecture and opinion, but he is at least very worked up by the article in the NY Times.
This kid has slid in the rankings pretty much all season. Anybody got any opinion as to how good this kid actually is anyways?
Also, Texas hasn't had a 'big-time' DT commit in awhile so I am not worried. Texas does just fine with what they get. Mack got a couple good ones early on and I think that will work out just fine.
No one has mentioned that he may not want to compete with the other 4 star kids we are getting. Warren will be better than J Mac. I have seen them both play.
I am not at all surprized that we did not get him. I said on this board several months ago that he would probably go elsewhere and was poo-pooed by many posters for saying that. We do not have much luck with his caliber of athlete when they want to stretch out the recruting process. I cannot even speculate why.
McFarland and his momma have guaranteed themselves that they will never get hired by any businesses run by Longhorns. So, some of McFarland's fears have come true.
He is another prima donna. If he stays healthy, he will land in the pro's regardless of where he plays. In the long run, it's his choice, or his mama's, but a bad one. He and his will be very wealthy regardless. But, if he had a conscious, he would not play against his home state and I hope our guys whip his a$$...bad!!
After listening to Jamarkus after the Army AA game, it seems like there could be more to this than I originally thought. Sounds like the guy is looking more for a dad, than a football coach.
