McCoy and running

In Monday's Houston Chronicle the Rice beat writer was doing his write-up and tossed in a mention that if Rice can't stop McCoy from running how are they going to stop better runners. I don't understand this...and we've seen it since McCoy arrived here. For whatever reason people (at least in the media) never respect his ability to run. In my opinion....McCoy can burn. I would like to know what his current 40 time is.

Not to turn this into a Chiles debate but when I watch both of them run McCoy looks faster and is much more shifty in the open field.

I hope teams do as the media in ignoring his ability to run because McCoy will continue to eat them up with his legs.

To me it isn't so much how fast Colt is, but how he breaks arm tackles like he is playing against 4th graders. I think it is this lack of respect by most teams that allows him to get free so much, so let the discounting continue.

McCoy played point guard in high school, so he is a much better athlete than many assume. He is fast (I'd guess 4.6-4.7 or thereabouts), is shifty in traffic, breaks arm tackles, and has great vision and body control in the open field.

I'd say he is just as good as VY was at escaping from a collapsing pocket and making yards in traffic (indeed, Colt has had some highlight-reel escapes and spin moves in his career, often on plays where the drive would die without the first down he picked up). The big difference is that, on plays where Colt picks up 15-20 yards, VY would often take it all the way because he had more top-end speed and could juke the last DB a little better than Colt.

That said, while not at VY's level, he has more running ability than 90% of QB's out there, and WAY more than anyone with similar passing stats.

The kid is doing just great. He will own every record when its all said and done, and if he wins a MNC (a big IF), he will join Street and VY as the greatest QB's in UT history (he is already on the tier just below those guys).

The funny thing about Colt is he just seemed to magically gain really good running ability in the middle of last season. For his first year and a half at UT he hardly ran the ball at all and didn't accomplish much of note when he did. Did he save up enough Football Gold to buy a Cape of Scrambling or something?

Twolv - that is an interesting observation.

The overall evaluation of Colt McCoy -- in terms of his running ability at the intercollegiate level -- likely is affected by his unsuccessful record in that department at Texas vs. Ohio State, Kansas State, Oklahoma and A&M.

Last year, for example, in the Horns' three losses (to KState, OU and A&M), Colt carried the football 21 times for 13 yards and a 0.7 average yard-per-carry (in those three contests combined).

It will be interesting to see how things turn out this time around vs. the Horns' toughest opponents.

I don't care if he gains another yard, as long as it is because the opponents are respecting the possibility of his taking off. That should keep some LBs out of zone coverage, and open up some receivers. If they drop back and leave him a lane, I want him to take it. I'd prefer if he didn't lead with his head!

Colt is not only our leading rusher, he's the leading B12 QB rusher and he's 2nd in the B12 in passing surpassing Heisman and All-American candidate Chase Daniel.

Hook'em!!!

Is a QB more likely to get hurt while running or while standing still back in the pocket? How about one with a history of shoulder/neck injuries? Is he more likely to get hurt from a hit he delivers or takes on the run or from a hit he takes in the middle of his throwing motion?

It doesn't bother me at all to see him run. It's a big part of his game.

Has Colt ever gotten hurt while scrambling or running in the open field?

There are three times I can think of where he was hurt enough to miss at least one play. One was on a QB sneak and the other two were in the pocket when he was hit while throwing a pass.

If Greg Davis ever calls another goal line qb sneak, I propose that he be fired immediately. Especially if we end up with only cupcake opponents between us and the National Championship.
