McCain/Lieberman ticket

Assuming McCain gets the nomination, how realistic is this to happening? Who else would McCain consider. Regardless of how one feels about either of these men, this seems like it would be a very difficult ticket to beat, as they would likely be viewed as the ultimate "bi-partisians," always a strong lable to have in a presidential election.

UTI, I agree that many people who are fed up with both parties would see McCain/Lieberman as a very attractive ticket. The fact that the Dems pushed Lieberman out of the party in CT is pretty sad if you ask me. It also shows that in that state at least, the party is out of touch with the wishes of the people.
I do realise that if McCain gets the nomination I will vote for him regardless of his VP, so I am biased in that way.

It wouldn't matter what McCain wants. The party will groom him if he's their nominee and the party's not gonna put a former Democrat and still ideological Democrat in as VP.

And it is Lieberman's own fault he's not a Democrat now. He lost the Democratic primary. His state's and party's voters spoke and he did an end around.

I think it's obvious (to me at least) that Huckabee's trying to set himself up as McCain's running partner. He has nothing but nice things to say about McCain and really seems to support him. I would be shocked if McCain didn't pick Huck (assuming Maverick gets the nom).

I would support a McCain/whoever ticket, except I don't want him to pick Huckabee. I am not evangelical, but am a conservative who is more interested in economic conservatism. So that's why I was leaning toward Romney (and because I don't have an issue with voting for a Mormon).

Romney as VP would mean that he'd preside over the Senate. This would be interesting.

What happens if McCain picks someone totally out of the current fold? Giuliani for AG and someone else for VP, for example?

This is the worst idea I've heard in quite some time. He has to do something to get the conservatives on his side. I don't see Romney being the one, either. KBH might be a good choice but I'm sure there are many other possibilities. George Voinovich from Ohio would be a good choice IMO.

McCain/ Lieberman with be a deathnail for the GOP IMO.

THEU- I wonder where you get that Lieberman was "pushed out of the Democratic party?" You do recall the Dems holding a primary election and Leiberman losing it? I assume you remember that? The fact this is the truth makes your assertion.. false.

McCain and Lieberman are pretty much the same person. McCain would need someone to hold the party together and bring people out to vote. Disliking Hillary is not enough to put McCain over the top.

McCain/Condi Rice...Now that would be an interesting combination! He'd get a few votes with her as vp.

The pundits have stated that McCain could be looking at Huckabee as his running mate.

Apparently he will give street cred to McCain in the southern evangelical states.

And Huckabee is a lighter candidate, I find him amusing.
Would be good choice IMO

I think Huckabee would make sense from a strategic/electoral standpoint. I don't care much for him, and he does scare me a little. But I would be fine with it because I don't think he'd have much influence as VP.

Obviously we're not talking about a Cheney-style VP here, rather the more traditional, background role.

I wonder what would happen if McCain decided to be a true maverick and went for someone like Zell Miller. It seems like such a person would help in the Southern states but would they make inroads in the Midwest and Southwest? They would lose some of the evangelicals and would gain some independents, especially against Hilllary.

Why would he need help in the Southern states and why would Miller make inroads in the Midwest and Southwest? Do people there even know who Miller is?

You do know that the election is for the presidency of the United States and not for the presidency of the Sun City neighborhood association?

I agree with what you said, but I'm trying to think of someone like Lieberman (who is very similar to McCain) but is more palatable to the Republican base. I think someone like Huckabee would be the Republican social conservative choice but he probably would not be McCain's choice. Plus, Huckabee would have zero positive impact in the Midwest and Southwest.

usually the vp candidate does the ticket's dirty work. but i don't know where the r's are going tofind a bigger prick than mccain.

hook'em

Huckabee's views on science and religion will scare off many of the independents that would be likely to vote for McCain. It would also cause many moderate Republicans to stay home as you can see from the posts on this thread. He would be stupid to have Huckabee as his running mate.
