McCain is so Bob Dole

Man with Romney leaving the race I get the feeling more and more the Republicans know this isn't their year and Romney (and anyone else) is setting himself up for 2012.

McCain has wanted it for so long a la Dole and he finally gets his chance and will get pummeled, esp by Obama.

The country is ready for a fresh, young face and they don't care if he has the ability or experience to do well (im not saying he doesnt, just that it makes no difference). Hi inexperience helps him, he doesn't seem jaded.

Poor sacrifical lamb Dole - I wonder if he knew - I wonder if McCain knows.

McCain is more personable and likable than Dole and is even admired by Dems, which irks the far right.

Dole and McCain are war heroes, old, and Republicans so I guess the similarities may seem deep but I dont' think McCain has that kind of negative or sense of malaise about him.

I get the impression that the majority of Republicans in the middle want a new course and are adjusting. This conveniently fits in with my belief that power dervies from the center. I don't believe that McCain is somehow not conservative, he is more in line with the moderate Republicans, and the majority of the people are gravitating there. He certainly is more in line with the historical values of the Republican party than Bush.

It will be interesting to see how he does versus Huckabee. I sense that the current matchup is a fight, almost literally, for the soul of the party. As someone who is almost surely going to vote Democratic, depending on who is nominated, I am pleased by how things are developing -- not because I think McCain ices the race for the Democrats, but because it offers a reason to pause and think about voting for the other side. If the Republicans nominate Huckabee, it is a guaranteed Democratic win -- that is a no-brainer no matter how you cut it.
