McAllen?

We just opened a new office in McAllen, and I might be going down there for a few days to help out with some stuff. Anyone recommend any places to eat/hang out? Or places to stay?

It is what it is...a border town.

Their airport has 1 terminal with 4 landing strips. Getting a cab is easy.

Not much to do there. We ate at Johnny Carino's one night and a local Tex-Mex place that the name escapes me. (It's a local chain and you will see 5 of them guarenteed) Would not recommend it in the least.

No nightlife there. Head into Mexico if you want any decent action for cheap. There really isn't a downtown area except for perhaps 2 blocks worth of buildings.

We stayed at the La Quinta near Texas Pan-Am. Probably the best hotel in the area which isn't saying much.

Just be thankful that you aren't moving there.

i spent some time in the valley this summer, and while i dont know their names or addresses, i could probably direct you to some awesome taco stands all over the area. but when i think about it, i went to maybe a dozen different taco places and they were all awesome, none necessarily better than the other, just different. just find the nearest local, hole-in-the-wall dingy mexican restaurant and you cant go wrong.

so, as far as where to eat, my advice is to eat a lot of cheap tacos pretty much anywhere you see a decrepit building with bright paint and an absence of english words (and obviously, stay away from johnny carinos).

There is a Embassy Suites down here, that may be a safe bet. As far as eats, Palenque Grill off 83 has some very good tacos. Get the carne asada tacos with corn tortillas. Don't forget to add the cilantro and cebollas tambien. The place is kind of expensive for tacos, but they are badass. They also bring out some refried beans with chorizo and homemade chips...it's the ****. For cheap tacos, try Taqueria El Zarape, there are two on 10th St.,one on 23rd. Good tacos para el crudo. Costa Mesa (11th st.) also has good mexican food, Espana has some good food (mediterranean), but it's expensive. You can hang out there with the "high society" (or at least that's what people who go there think) of McAllen. If you want a sport bar, pretty much only Buffalo Wild Wings on Nolana. If you want to see some titties, Stilletos off Sugar road is the place. If you want to get your freak on, go to Reynosa. Park on the US side, walk across, and tell a cabbie to take you to Boystown. Of course, this is all hearsay, so I have no personal knowledge of any of the malfeasance that may go on there.
As far as nightlife, I've got a 2 year old, so don't do this much anymore. One of the hotspots (and I use that term recklessly here) is Kafecitos. Here is their websiteThe Link

I refer you to the "About Us" part of the site wherein the following is stated: "Welcome to Kafecitos Social Club,,the only location where jet setters and hip people come to embellish their senses and taste buds, look around and see who we are and where we are going." Looking at the pictures posted on that site, I'm not sure I want to know or follow where those people are going.

Bienvenidos a McAllen!!
