Maybe this is bigger than we thought

[Dawg Sports] An SEC source with knowledge of the inner workings of the league office: “A couple more dominoes fall and we’re in a situation where the SEC could become its own division. More teams have reached out than what’s being reported. 20-24 within the realm of possibility.”

Rumor is that Michigan and Ohio State, FSU and Clemson (and presumptively ND) have already been offered.

If USC and Stanford are offered and the SEC can keep Aggie, this really is seismic.

People are already highly critical of the SEC for their scheduling. Georgia and the aggies not playing until 2019 for example. Probably had a game scheduled last year wiped out by covid. What's appealing about a home&home conference matchup with Ohio State every 12 years?

That's more than now. And if they have a pd system that number could increase during the regular season or due to a three round playoff. Not saying it will happen but the SEC commissioner is an a$$ kicker and The others look lost.
If these teams leave the Big and ACC are tase conferences any different than the Big 12. Does the PAC 12 have more than 2-4 teams carrying the water?

And 5 bucks is more than 2. You don't have to be in the same conference to play.

I think what the OP and Dawg Sports might be alluding to is not just a mega-conference, but an entity whose power and reach would match or exceed the NCAA itself. In other words, the SEC may just be planning for a post-NCAA world.

Correct. Many are speculating that SEC commissioner wants to set the rules about NIL rather than leave it to the NCAA. By grouping the teams (or most of them) in one "conference', the group can not only set the rules but get most of the significant TV money. If that happens does USC, Michigan or Ohio State dare say thanks but no thanks, probably not.

I think the definition of a conference and the Power 5 will be rewritten to the haves and the have much less. There will be a lot of pin action in the short term but if WVU goes quickly to the ACC and others go quickly to the Big and Pac 12, I suspect the Big and ACC suspect the SEC is coming for their Marquee teams. If FSU and Clemson (or other marquee programs) go quickly, the realignment will be crazy and rapid.

To make much worse, SEC Commissioner is smarter than the others in spades.

Well....pretty easy to be an ***-kicker when almost everyone is your boot-licker, enabling and supporting your every move.
The SEC better give all media, ESPN, NCAA and just about every other boot licker a big sloppy kiss and alot of dough if they do get their dreams to reality

I heard from an LSU buddy that the recruits are already calling the reformatted SEC " the little NFL".
He says there are more teams to come and OSU and Tech will not be in the mix. When you look at the other conferences I see less than 10 teams that are arguably greater than the remains Big 12. Other conferences will merge or die.

In following the NFL, I never think that 32 teams is too few; I would probably feel the same way about college football.

If this transpires (a big "if"), then it may look a bit like English soccer. A premier league of nothing but the big, and nearly big, boys. Then a viable champions league right beneath it, consisting mostly of some good teams, with good fan bases, but who aren't quite up to par for the premier league. The next question is: do they ever kick out the laggards...? Or promote up-and-comers/rising stars...?

I hate the thought of some college football teams Falling Away into Oblivion.
Don't some of these college teams, I'm sorry College universities, depend on the football program for money.
I like the idea of Texas and Oklahoma joining the SEC but I don't like some other college football programs being hurt by this move.
I hope for the best for the 8 who are left to fend for themselves.
This is now a big mess in the college football landscape.
Looks like most of the top recruits will go to the SEC.
Looks like the playing field is coming into an unfair level of play.
There are some teams outside the SEC who are really good like Clemson Ohio State and Oregon (who are now getting good players, and North Carolina) but Ohio State and Clemson may be joining the SEC also..super mega conference.

Perhaps what might happen is all the teams outside the SEC will play for their on Championship. Have their own playoffs and a champion at the end of the year.

Or am i overthinking this?

While I'm all UT all the time. I'd like to see at least Tech and TCU get a soft landing, and frankly OSU deserves a soft landing. Baylor, KU, KSU, WV, ISU-->I don't care that much about what happens to them.

Now for the near term future (5 years or so), once the playoff system commences, the remaining Big 12 schools will have at least a temporary advantage, in that it will be relatively easy for the best among them to make the playoffs. But...... at some point they may have to face the music when the playoff committee decides the Big 12 no longer merits an automatic berth in the playoffs. If Tech, TCU, OSU were to get PAC invites, and USC stays put in the PAC, that would be a fantastic scenario for all 3. They'd be better off than they currently are.

Living in SEC country, it is the dominant discussion. Reading other SEC boards, the dominant topic is Texas. We are not a blue blood, we are arrogant, our stadium isn't as big as SEC stadiums, Horns down penalties, we have not won anything lately etc. We are already in their heads. I think we get a huge bump in recruiting and there will be a corresponding fall in recruiting for aggy and LSU. We might struggle initially, but I think as the Jimmys and Joes sign up, the SEC will regret the move.

I agree there could be several outcomes but as it is now SEC will get more per team than Any other conference by a lot and the NIL allowing payments to be out loud and the SEC's willingness to pay it will create a poor outcome for everyone else (on the recruiting trail).

I suspect that most college programs lose money and are not self sufficient. I also suspect teams like Kansas may drop from Division one or dump football so they can dump money losing women sports.

The more I think about it, the more I think that by definition, every college that now is so “devastated” by our doing something different owes us a recognition that we were carrying them all this time. All those horns down and insults and mockery—why aren’t they saying, “good riddance”? Instead, it’s “I thought we had an agreement we could stay rent free in your guest room forever! Now we can’t suck off you any more?” And the f-ing refs of the conference who continually and deliberately screwed us for years—you can go ref Baylor-OSU wherever they get to keep playing.
Well, that’s how I feel this morning….

I think 32 is perfect.

32 is a nice power of 2 [2^5]. Next one is 64 so probably too big for a single league! Next number that could work in my mind is 40 teams - one more in each division. Hard to add 8 new teams at once so awkward to get there.
