Mavs to sign Diop

I can't believe they gave Diop the full mid-level exception for the max years (5). I thought it was a bad move to trade him in the first place, and I think it's a bad move to re-sign him for that much money. I can't figure out who they were bidding against. At least the Mavs fans can now revisit their: "He was a just a stiff with 6 fouls to give and wasn't that good defensively and not that important" stance.

Green is a low-risk signing that I like. If he can get his head on straight, he could be a player.

The Mavs gave him too much money, but the defense should be much better.

The second half of the season the Mavs defense sucked *** once Erick Dampier was out of the game and either Dirk or Brandon Bass had to play the 5.

Hmm...it would be nice if they had Devin Harris as well.

Losing Diop and the ability to play two centers for 40+ minutes was the biggest reason I was against the Kidd/Harris trade.

i was under the thought that Kidd would play as well as Harris but that was obviously a mistake. Hopefully Kidd will play better this season.

If im not mistaken, this is the last year that the Mavs have to eat Kidds $20 million salary?

i want to word this carefully.

to the mavs, diop is worth the 5 year MLE. why? b/c he is the anchor of the entire defense. not just the interior defense... the entire defense. w/o diop they have absolutely no interior presence.

The Mavs paid that much to get Diop because that's what it took to get him back. There were 4 other teams offering him the full MLE. He chose Dallas out of the 5 for obvious reasons, but any less money and he would have gone elsewhere.

That's like saying "if McGrady and Yao are healthy, the Rockets are contenders".

His skills on the offensive end are putting back rebounds and dunking alley-oops from Paul. His main impact in the NO-SA series was playing good defense on Duncan. Blocked shots per game isn't all that useful of a measure of post defensive skills any more than steals per game make Baron Davis and Allen Iverson two of the best perimeter defenders in the league, far ahead of Bruce Bowen and Tayshaun Prince.
