Was talking over a beer with a friend of mine the other day and we came up with some useless trivia.

Dallas has a chance soon to join an elite group of cities that have all 4 major sports championships, NFL, NHL, NBA, and MLB. Contingent upon the Mavs, that would leave only the Texas Rangers to win a World Series, of course they were in it last year and have as good a chance of anyone else this year I guess.

Can you name the other cities?

Remember, it's the NFL, not the Superbowl.

Also, MLB goes back, back, back, waaaaayyyy back. Still counts.

I'll start out with the obvious, New York. Jets, Giants (even before leaving for New Jersey, still called the Giants), Yankees, Mets, Knicks, Rangers, Islanders. Right?

Chicago. Bears, Cubs (way back), White Sox, Bulls, BlackHawks.

Philadelphia. Eagles (1960 and a couple before), Phillies, 76ers, Flyers.

Does Boston count with the Patriots being renamed the New England Patriots? Celtics, Bruins, Red Sox.

Detroit. Lions (Bobby Layne), Tigers, Pistons, Red Wings.

So, looks like 5 if you count Boston, unless someone can name another. Dallas would be the 6th?

Cities I don't think make it (some have never even fielded all 4 sports):

Pittsburgh (NBA?)
Cincinnati (NFL, NHL?)
Cleveland (NHL?)
Denver
Houston
Miami
New Orleans
Atlanta
Los Angeles
Seattle
San Francisco
St. Louis

Just some meaningless trivia.

Good on Dallas (Mavs), and good luck to the Rangers this season.

Actually my tenses were out of whack; my "contingent" note was when we were discussing it the other day.

Sure, I know now that the Mavs have won, but the Rangers still need to win the World Series to complete the 4th title.

OK, but how many cities have hosted the World Series, The Superbowl, & The NBA Finals in a 9 month span???
That can't be real common.

Sincere congratulations to the Mavs. I am very happy the trophy is back in the Lone Star State, though I'd be happier if it was about 300 miles further south!

I, too, would like to see the trophy down in San Antonio. Nevertheless, it is a well deserved championship for the Mavs. As a life-long Spurs fan who's lived in Dallas for the last 13 years, it has been difficult at times to pull for the Mavs given the increased intensity of what has become one of the best NBA rivalries (Spurs/Mavs). As an NBA fan, though, it has been enjoyable watching Dirk work his *** off to improve year after year and to truly earn and deserve a championship. Congrats to the Mavs.

It's really nice to see the Spurs fans onboard with the Mavs. If the NBA could realign the divisions and get the Thunder with the Texas teams it would really establish some strong rivalries to go with the ones already in existence.

Hopefully in coming days Mavs will get more credit for winning than "the Heat losing," though if LeBron continues to make stupid *** public statements it's going to keep the focus on him/them.

Hook'em!!!

Hey blonthang Dallas also has a major league pro men's soccer team. The Dallas Tornadoes won the Northwest American Soccer League Championship in 1971 led by Kyle Rote Jr. whose father was great SMU and later NY Giant WR. this would give us four since the Mavs, Cowboys, Stars have won also won championship.
In fact an argument could be for a fifth one since The Dallas Texans of the old American Football League won the AFL championship in 1963 beating the Houston Oilers (who had won it the prior two years) in OT. This was before the merger of the two leagues that would establish the super bowl. After than championship year in Dallas the Texas moved to Kansas City where they became the Chiefs and won the Super Bowl in 1970.

Sorry, BIS, I just can't come to terms with equating MLS with the NFL, NBA, NHL or MLB, at least in the U.S. And I've been to Maracana Stadium in Rio (Pele's home field), and tried, tried to like soccer. Beyond my personal tastes, the 4 big sports have decades of American history as compared to MLS.

Maybe in 50 years or so, but today? Not so much, IMHO.

Regarding the old Texans (now Chiefs) they didn't win the NFL, of course, they won the AFL, at a time when the AFL was, well, not the NFL. I mean the Houston Oilers were also AFL champs.

According to "my" system

nascent leagues like the AFL, ABA, WHL don't count. Until those teams are absorbed into the "big 4." My rule, and I'm sticking to it.

One I did miss was the old Brooklyn Dodgers who won the World Series in NY before moving to LA.

OTOH, one I didn't miss was the Rams, who won the NFL title in St. Louis, not while in LA, unless they won it in the 50s or the like.

too bad the stars beat the buffalo sabres instead of the florida panthers for their stanley cup or that would be great.

I like how Texas teams have now won 7 out of the last 18 NBA Finals, with all three teams winning one. You have to go back to 1975 to find another state with even two teams winning the Finals.
