I've been a Mavs fan for a long time (dropped the Rockets when they made the cynical move to trade Malone so they could stink bad enough to get Sampson). In 1987-88, they lost in the west finals to the Lakers (eventual champs) in 7 games. That Mavs team was young and talented- starters were Donaldson, Perkins, Aguirre, Blackmon and Harper. Key reserves were Tarpley, Schrempf and Davis.
Believing they were just a piece or so away, they traded Aguirre for Dantley (youth for age) and Schrempf for Herb Williams (youth for age). As they started to decay, they kept trading away pieces (Perkins, Blackmon and Harper), until they were the worst team of the '90s. In retrospect, they would have been much better off holding on to what they started with.
Now, they have made a trade to pik up that one last piece- Kidd. There is a pretty good chance, looking at it objectively, that this trade won't work out, and that the Mavs will be no better, and maybe worse, than before. It's possible that the Mavs really had one chance at a title, and it was two years ago when they let it slip away against the Heat. If so, it will be interesting to see what a hyper-competitive Cuban does next- grasp at straws to stay viable, or break it all down and start from scratch again.
