Maui hotels - revisted

I am looking for recs on Maui hotels.

I wanted to take the wife on a special trip over Christmas this yr, something she will remember.

I have heard the 4 seasons is nice - but some people say it is overpriced. The Ritz is closed until Januaury.

I do not mind shelling out some cash for this trip since it is a special occassion.

Any recs and/or tips for the trip would be greatly appreciated.

The Grand Wailea. Wife and I went there for our honeymoon at the end of August/beginning of September. It's right next door to the Four Seasons, so you can walk over there if you want to eat (connecting paths on the beach). It has seven pools, including an adults only pool that also overlooks the ocean. The spa there is incredible and is one of the top spas in US/Mexico/Carribean. It was great & the staff was very friendly/helpful/accomodating.

Side note - if you go snorkeling, take one of the beach snorkeling/kayak trips instead of going out to Molokini. Saw the same fish, no other people & a lot more turtles (plus we got to swim with them).

We stayed in the Wailea Renaissance last year for our honeymoon and liked it there. I would recommend the Wailea area. It seems less crowded on that side of te island.

My wife and I stayed at the Maui Prince resort for our honeymoon 3 years ago. Definitely recommend it and had a great time. Resort seemed to mostly have couples on their honeymoon with a few families. Service was great! My only complaint was the room felt like it was outside at times, a bit damp.

Fairmont Kea Lani - It is on the same beach as the Grand Wailea and the Four Seasons. We stayed at the Grand Wailea on our honeymoon. The Grand Wailea is great if you can time the trip when school is in. Do not stay there during the summer or over spring break. We spent alot of time at the Kea Lani beach. You can also snokle straight out to see lots of sea turtles. The dive boats anchor within swimming distance from the shore.

We stayed at the Maui Prince back in 2003 and LOVED it. It was somewhat secluded & away from the more crowded Wailea & Kaanapali (sp?). The beach was not crowded at all and snorkeling was great. Saw sea turtles, moray eel, & octopus.

The Maui Prince is more secluded, but it's 5 miles away from everything else in Wailea. The Fairmont/Four Seasons/Grand Wailea are all walking distance within eachother and connected by a beach front path, which is nice.

i stayed at the maui prince as well. it was a bit cheaper than everything else, but it was still really nice. great great quiet beach with snorkelling. also, its the closest to the molokini (sp) crater.

chaz it was either you or someone else we talked about this with on a previous maui thread. the room did feel wet sometimes.

i ate at the 4 seasons, it was one awesome hotel, but yeah probably a bit pricey.

Four Seasons.

You don't get nickled and dimed on the extras (like snorkeling equipment/beach chairs); the service is impeccable; and your room isn't a hike from the beach. The prices aren't that much more than the Grand Wailea but the service is miles better from my experience at both. If you have kids, the pools at the Grand Wailea make it worth a stay. With just the wife, I would choose the Four Seasons in a second.

Stayed at Four Seasons Maui last year. You simply cannot beat the service at a Four Seasons and this is one of their crown jewels. The spa is fantastic. The pool area is quiet with private cabanas and incredible areas by the pool overlooking the ocean. The restaurants are great (Wolfgang Puck's), the best breakfast buffet I've ever had. Great golf across the street at Wailea and Makena (I played Makena).

I can't recommend FS enough. Next Hawaii trip will be FS Big Island.

Sidenote: Michael Dell owns the hotel and lives there, apparently more of the year than he really lets folks know...

I can't recommend the Four Seaons highly enough. It's a beautiful hotel and the service was absolutely impeccable.

if you are looking for a more intimate experience, look into renting a beach house. we have been to Hawaii twice and have stayed in beach houses both times. its a great way to see the island from a locals point of view. down side is not having room service. up side is privacy, short walk to beach, more relaxed and like home type atmosphere.

The wife and I just got back from the Four Seasons Hualalai. That place is unbelievable but very expernsive (700/night). I've stayed a bunch in Maui and your options are Wailea (Four Seasons, grand Wailea and Fairont Kea Lani) all of which are very, very nice. Other than that, you can go to the West Side of the Island and stay at Kaanapali. There you will find Marriott, Hyatt, Westin, etc. More going on there with lahaina but I think I'd stay in Wailea.

Enjoy.
