I don't think Mason has really run the point but I like to see him bring it down that way DJ has a chance to get open 1 on 1 for a good shot or quick drive. I think he has a better chance getting points that way than bringing it down every time where is is doubled at the top of the key. Just change it up some during the game.
MUCH better job playing the 1, but that's not what made it tonight. Playing mad D, BIG on the boards, great shot selection....good lord son, you do that every night and you're an AA!!!
It's kinda like when Mihm would always start the play at the top of the key, dish to Wagner or Clack, and then position himself to get the offensive rebounds. Except Mason is 8 inches shorter.
If you let mason handle the ball up top while running DJ off screens then when DJ catches on the wing, it's a lot harder for the defense to be "help-side" which makes penetration for DJ a lot easier and thus creates opportunities for dishing to our bigs in the paint when their big guys overreact. It also puts a lot of pressure on the defense to have DJ coming off a screen on one side, and AJ coming off screens on the other. The defense has to chase thus opeing up screeners when their men show.
I agree that it also releases some pressure from DJ but it doesn't give him a rest. Running your man off of screens takes as much energy as handling the ball out on the point.
I love how Mason is playing. I only wish he was a bit more consistant with his shot and his willingness to take it. If he'd be just a little more aggressive with his shot selection it would force the inside defenders to come up some.
