Yes, Marley is put to sleep and I was in a puddle after reading the book. I think his death would top Ole Yeller, and Charlotte maybe in terms of freaking a little kid out. If I had young children, I would not take them unless we had a pre-movie talk about it. Just my .02. I don't think I can take seeing it as I put my beloved mutt mix, Jake to sleep last Nov. and am still not totally over it.
PS He dies in the book, haven't seen if they left it out of the movie. *Movie disclaimer, free of charge!
Let me put it to you this way. Me and my GF had a couple of hours to kill today so we decided to catch a flick. The only two movies that were starting within our time window were M&M and 7 Pounds. We chose the latter as both of us agreed that 7 Pounds would be much less of a bummer.
Everybody I know that has seen this wishes they were more prepared for this. They thought it would be like Milo and Otis or something like that.
They totally yank your heart out and yes, the dog dies and yes you will hate it. I will never, ever see this movie. If I had kids I would not take them to see it even if there was a talk before the movie. No thanks.
Now, if they had not cleaned their room or been brats over the holiday that is another story. This is a good way to enact revenge and feign innocence. "Kids, who wants to go see a movie?!"
my friend had a headache from all the crying after the movie. she's a sensitive girl though, so who knows. i quit reading the book halfway because I knew what was going to happen. i'm going to go see this but i know it's going to suck
Good luck with that. I know it will suck, therefore, I will not go. I learned this lesson from the last 3 Star Wars things. I knew the third would suck, suck, suck but went anyway.
Got a text from my sister yesterday ... "NEVER NEVER NEVER go see Marley and Me." Then I got another one about 20 minutes later ... "Seriously ... NEVER." Sister said she cried for an hour, then for another 45 minutes on the way home.
We had to put our childhood dog to sleep after he got old, dislocated a hip, and couldn't walk and wouldn't eat (i.e. basically, the same "old age" that takes Marley).
So no, I won't be going to see this movie, either. I read the book, and cried like a baby on an airplane on the way to a meeting. That's enough.
It's funny -- I can watch all kinds of shows in which people die, but I can't take it when an animal dies. I just love animals, way more than I love most people!
I asked the same question the OP did for the same reason. I was informed the dog was put down at the end. Why the hell do they have to do this, kill Aniston or Wilson, but leave the dog alone! They give this great preview of an awesome dog and then they kill it?? ******* Holllywood...
I read the book and literally cried like a little girl. It reminded me of the time when I was in elementary school and we watched "Where the Red Fern Grows". That was the first movie that ever made me cry.
Its funny, I can watch a movie where every man, woman, and child gets brutally murdered, but if they touch the dog, then I'm inconsolable.
LEGEND SPOILER so if you have not seen this movie, don't read this.
In Legend I had zero problem with Vampire types running around with humanity on the brink of extermination. Ho hum. But when the dog died, saving her owners life, forget it. That part sucked for me and for that reason I won't ever watch it again.
My 4th grade teacher read "Where the Red Fern Grows" to the class, and at the end she had to keep stopping to go out to the hallway and cry. And half the class that was left behind sat in their desks quietly sobbing.
Looking back, it's a little sad, a little weird, and kind of funny.
If there is a post about a movie I have not seen before I just don't read it. I don't want to see input and I have a good idea if I am going to see that movie or not. This site or a BBS won't make or break my decision to see a movie.
I think GOO needs to head to a hot tub for some relaxation.
I personally think this is one movie that people need to have spoiled beforehand. Especially if they have kids that they don't want feeling like **** for a while after the movie is seen. I would be very appreciative of knowing if I saw this movie I would feel like ****.
I think that a lot of people thought that "Marley & Me" was a pretty good movie. It was strong all through the weekend. And it's review rating on IMDB has gone UP since it was released and more than just sneak previewers have had an opportunity to see it.
The subject matter might be a bit tough, but that's part of life. (And it IS a true story, so blaming Hollywood is a little lame.)
Saw it today, it was really good but emotional at the end. I felt really bad for the little girl who kept wailing for the last 15 minutes of the film. Hope she doesn't have permanent damage.
