Marine dies in fight over Texas-Nebraska

That is sad beyond words. No matter how much we love it, football is just a game, the outcome of which is never
worth a human life.

Semper Fi, and God rest your soul, Marine.

That's just insane?

The article didn't have much as to when the shot actually happened (during the game/after the game?)

But that's just so wrong!!!

Wow. I mean clearly it was a horrible accident, but why the gun was in any way involved is just amazing. Frankly the ultra-fan act just needs to go away.

Unfortunately, the Marine who was killed was from Sinton. Here are two stories about the tragic events. My thoughts and prayers are with the family.

JACKSONVILLE, N.C. — A North Carolina-based Marine was accidentally shot and killed by a fellow Marine on Sunday as the pair argued over a football game, according to local media reports.

Cpl. Johnathon Clinton Rodriguez, 21, an aircraft electrical systems technician at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, was shot in the chest around 1 a.m. at an off-base home in Havelock, according to an air station news release. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Lionel Loya, 23, was charged with involuntary manslaughter, according to The Daily News of Jacksonville. His rank was not immediately available. Friends told authorities that he and Rodriguez were assigned to Marine Tactical Electronic Warfare Squadron 2.

Havelock Police Chief G. Wayne Cyrus told The Daily News that Rodriguez and Loya were watching the Texas-Nebraska football game at Loya’s home when they began to argue.

“It was just friendly banter going back and forth,” Cyrus told the newspaper. “One was a Texas fan and one was not.”

The bickering led to a scuffle — and then a gunshot, Cyrus said. A .40-caliber semi-automatic pistol was recovered from the scene.

Loya was arrested by civilian police and later released to military authorities. Cherry Point officials would not release any details about him, citing the ongoing investigation.

Rodriguez joined the Corps in May 2007. He served one tour in Iraq.

SINTON--A U.S. Marine from Sinton has been killed, but not while serving abroad. The family of 21-year old Jonathan Rodriguez said he was fatally shot at a home in North Carolina.
Another Marine, Lionel Loya, has been charged with involuntary manslaughter. The Rodriguez family said the men were friends, were assigned to the same Marine unit and had even planned to be roommates.
It's believed the two were fighting over a football game Saturday night when Loya accidentally shot him.

This really hits hard since he was from Sinton. We want Texas to win but everyone must remember it is football and meant to be enjoyed but not at the cost of a human life. It seems like it was a horrible accident but guns don't belong in settings like this or at parties. This is sad news for me and folks in Sinton.

Why on earth would you need to have your firearm ON YOUR PERSON while watching a game in North Carolina? I could understand if these guys were deployed, but in North Carolina?

This is terribly, terribly sad, and I feel very bad for all involved. Prayers for the dead Marine's family, and prayers for the one who killed him, and his family as well ... it's not going to be easy for them, either.

This is uncalled for. I have been upset over bad calls by officials, obnoxious fans at games, and horrible losses. Not ONCE have I ever felt the urge to get out a gun and shoot someone over it. Why can't everyone understand that this is simply a GAME?!?
